Hi guys. I have a question about transferring to a four year after a previous dismissal on my transcript.
I attended a CC directly out of HS in 2010, did incredibly poorly due to mental health issues and was ultimately academically dismissed from the college.
I waited a couple years to get my life together before attempting to re-enroll in the same CC. I was able to re-enroll for the Fall 2014-Spring 2015 semesters and did much better. 3.3 GPA.
My CC has a program for students who were previously academically dismissed and were unenrolled in the college for more than 2 years-essentially, if you do well your first semester back they will “get rid” of your bad grades. They don’t count towards your GPA, but they do show up on your transcript.
I plan on graduating this coming spring with an AS, but I want to transfer to a four year SUNY to persue a BA in edu or English.
My question is- will my transcript/academic dismissal end up haunting me for the rest of my academic career, or will I be able to transfer semi-smoothly? I feel as if I’ve definitely proved myself as a student, but I’m worried my academic dismissal will make colleges hesitant to admit me.
Thanks!
I am pretty sure you will find a school who will admit you. Yourrecentacademic performance will count heavily. Make sure you apply to a range of schools with different levels of selectivity though.
I expect that if you have fulfilled the requirements for automatic transfer from your CC into any of the SUNYs, transfer to at least the participating SUNY should go smoothly. However, you need confirmation that this really will work, so pay a visit to the Transfer Advisor at your CC, and talk about your plans and concerns. That person’t whole job is to help students find good options for continuing their educations.
Wishing you all the best!
