Anyone going? Anyone gone before and remember what it was like? My dad decided to take me this summer in June because he noticed my interest in the school. The only thing that makes me nervous about going is falling too much in love with the school with the chance of getting rejected admission, haha

We went last year and it was a wonderful program. You will literally fall in love with the school. We were treated like royal guests- between the food, the happiness of the students, and the welcoming attitude of the admissions staff- it was a perfectly planned and executed day. We were even given a free vandy t shirt for my daughter!

You are right though to be anxious about admission. Read the vandy admissions blog - you will learn that 25% of the admitted class had a perfect 2400 on the SAT. If you want to be admitted, plan on achieving at least a 2100 SAT, at least a 33 on the ACT, and then have done extensive extracurriculars. Plus have a hook - oh- and being captain in a varsity sport or president of a major school club like student council will be needed too. Do something interesting this summer too, not just volunteer at a camp. Try incorporating your potential major into a summer experience too.

Good luck!

I’m waiting on scores to come in buy I’m sure I did good. Also, I have been colorguard captain for two years at my school and was recently elected VP for the National Honor Society. I can’t do any major summer programs this year because I’m taking a couple college classes through the local college here. How does all that sound? I’m really excited to visit the campus though :)

*you think you did WELL. what test did you take? and what is your anticipated score? there are so many other factors when it comes to admissions. you honestly dont need to do all the things that snajean said, but show that you care about school as well as other aspects of your life. also, where does it ever say that 25% of the admitted class had a perfect SAT score?

Well I took both the SAT and ACT. I didn’t do well the first time on the SAT so I’m taking it again. The ACT I felt much more confident with, so I’m anticipating in the 32-35 range

Actually Vandy admission blog states that middle 50% SAT is 1470-1590 for admitted student. I think that this does not necessarily mean 25% of admitted applicants score perfectly, though, some could also score 1590.
Nevertheless, it is a high leap in the standard of admitted students. Vandy is becoming one of the hardest colleges to get in.

Hope it helps.

I talked to an admissions counselor and she told me that the 50% for SAT scores is 1350-1570

The Vanderbilt Admissions Blog used to have a line that said 25% of the class had a perfect or near perfect SAT score, from 1590-1600. It was referenced by a number of college confidential readers in the Vanderbilt Official Class of 2016 thread. Look for the older of the threads and you will read what I read. That’s where I first learned of it. The line seems to have been pulled from the blog. Vanderbilt may have been getting questioned by the statistic, as a numer of college confidential readers were questioning the validity as well. Either way, Vanderbilt is still claiming they had a 12% admit rate, making it more difficult than the University of Pennsylvania, and probably many other schools ahead of vandy’s 17th ranking in USNWR.

Showing an interest in Vanderbilt is difficult since Vanderbilt’s application had no special essay nor did it have a why Vanderbilt essay. Maybe you should write a special common application essay just for Vanderbilt which includes your interest in attending Vanderbilt.

What exactly is important in having a hook for essays?

Sent from my DROIDX using CC

Most people think of legacy status, or being an URM is a hook. but I think a hook can be broader than that. Your common app essay should be specific to you. If you have an economic situation or a persoanal situation that has impacted your life or schoolwork then it may be relevant to write about that in your essay.

If Vandy’s accepted students 50% SAT’s are 1470-1590 and ACT’s are 33-35 that means 25% of their accepted students (about 800) had a perfect SAT or ACT. The ACT webpage reports only 705 students scored 36 on the 2011 test.

@bud123: I just want to explain again that 50% SAT are 1470-1590 does NOT mean that 25% of accepted students have a perfect SAT score. These 25% can obviously have 1590 score also. Let take an example, if you have ten people with the same 1400 score, so is it true that the 50th also 1400?

Also, please take into account that NOT all applicants submit ACT or SAT score. Another example, if there is only 10 students applying to Vandy submitting ACT. Then only 3 who apply to Vandy has 35 or 36 score. Does this clash with your statistics from ACT webpage. I believe not.

After one application season, one of the lesson I learn is to be very aware of numbers or statistics. If you are applying next year please absorb it too.

Peace…
