Gracilisae

Decision: Deferred big sigh

Stats:
SAT: 1490 – 800 verbal, 690 math
SAT IIs: 780 math IIC, 800 writing, 740 u.s. history
GPA: 4.1 weighted, probably 4 or 3.95 unweighted
Rank: my school does not rank, but I’d probably be in the top 5%, if not higher
Other stats: AP’s – 5 U.S. Hist, 5 AP Lang… taking four more APs this year
Subjective:
Essays: I thought these were excellent... Both my short essays and my long one were examples of what I thought was my best writing
Teacher Recs: I know one was EXCELLENT – my teacher read it to me, about how I was the best student he’s ever had in his career. The other two were also very good, but not as outstanding as the others. They also all marked me as “top few in career” with one “top 5% of the year” that I know of from one teacher.
Counselor Rec: I don’t know but I’d assume it was pretty good, since I have a pretty close relationship with my counselor as far as relationships go at my school, where counselors don’t know some students’ names – I’ve gone to talk to him a lot about academic things over the past four years.
Hook (if any): My interest in writing….
Major ECs: Cross-country captain, managing editor of nationally-known school newspaper, varsity XC and track, written submissions editor of literary magazine, LIT last year (and 3 years participation prior to that) of a Girl Scout service group that is the “Govenors’ Honor Guard” on Mackinac Island for a week each summer (raise and lower the flags, stand duty, etc.), Regional Planning board for the Metro Detroit Girl Scout Council… a lot of other things as well
AB/BSE: AB
Strenth/Weakness: I thought my strength was my interest in learning (clearly emphasized in my essays), my writing, my range of interests but my weakness was definitely math (if you can call A-s and As vs. A+s weak... oh well *tries to stop being bitter *)
Location/Person:
State or Country: Michigan
School Type: medium sized public, well-known for its academic excellence, has been on national best schools list
Ethnicity: white
Gender: female
Other Factors:
Why do you think you got deferred/admitted: I think my math SAT I score hurt me, but I thought by bringing my SAT IIc up to 780 it showed that my math skills greatly improved in the past few months (as I went into Calculus). Also 2 other girls from my school applied ED, both which were very qualified - one is both a legacy and (I think) a recruited rower... I didn't think applicants from schools were compared to each other for "slots" but who knows...

School Type: private (10th & 11th grades)/homeschooled w/university courses (12th grade)
Ethnicity: white
Gender: female
Other Factors:
Unusual education could have worked against me
Odd fact: I got no interview (this was strange since I live in an area with a good-sized alumni association)
I did not confirm the legitimacy of Princeton’s need-blind admissions policy, lol.

Subjective:

Essays: 1 good, 1 very good, 1 great

Teacher Recs: Extremely good

Counselor Rec: Extremley good (for a new counselor)

Hook (if any): Filmmaking/reel (won grant and produced short for national PBS, credited production manager/research/cameraman on 2 major feature documentaries (1 on breast cancer, 1 on Chagas, a south american disease), lots of advanced work experience and interships. Amazing rec from film mentor/employer.

State or Country: VA

School Type: Public (VERY competitive)

Ethnicity: White

Gender: Male

Other Factors:
* College Board messed up and did not send SATs, complaint resulted in complementary rush report, BUT didn't recieve "2nd Confirmation" some of you mentioned. Was this a postcard similar to the "We recieved your application" note?
*Pres of NHS, Pres of Honor Council (like at many colleges, deals with lying/cheating/stealing), Editor in Chief of School Newspaper, Captain Academic Team, Varsity Tennis, lots of EC activities inc. Humanities GovSchool.
*Asked for financial aid
*1 AP last year (only 1 avaliable), 5 this year (all possible), BUT schools classes are NOTORIOUSLY difficult (took all honors).

Why do you think you got deferred/admitted: Not sure, I'm looking into it. Obviously I'm not at the top of their list of applications but I'm curious as to whether they ever GOT my test scores. Perhaps a bit too much of a focus on film. Not sure if essays were as good as they could have been. Not too many APs (though took all avaliable).

Gender:Male
Other Factors:
i'm not really into any sport.. so my ECs have almost no sports.. maybe it factored in my deferral

FZERO
Decision: DEFERRED

Stats:
SAT:1510 (M760, V750)
SAT IIs: 800, 790, 780
GPA: 4.0 Unweighted
Rank: Unranked; est. 1%
Other stats: IB diploma, IB French:6, bunch of math/science awards, 7th in provincial essay contest, bunch of top/outstanding student awards.
Subjective:
Essays: In hindsight, one good, one average, one self-aggrandizing and moronic
Teacher Recs: one excellent, one dunno
Counselor Rec: didn't see, no idea how good
Hook (if any): Art. Sent in art portfolio, wrote essay on it, etc. Gallery shows, good ref. letter.
Major ECs:ART, peer counselling, community, webteam, magazine chief editor, youth philosopher's cafe founder, debater, karate bronze medalist.
AB/BSE: AB
Strenth/Weakness: I'm really well rounded, but I'm from Canada, which prob. works against me. I think one of my short essays sucked in hindsight, and I applied for financial aid (prob. not good idea since I'm international).
Location/Person:
State or Country:BC, Canada
School Type:Public
Ethnicity:Asian
Gender:Male
Other Factors: Why do you think you got deferred/admitted: Well, it seems like Princeton's not taking many art people this year. Art seems to not be a hook there anymore. Neither is IB diploma, so there goes the only two cards I held. My crappy essay probably cancelled out my good one, and applying internationally, being Asian, and not having any good hooks probably killed me.

Hooks: My brother's a Princeton undergraduate if that counts. Otherwis none
Major ECs: Founded a tutoring club for underpriviliged children, went to Bangladesh as a UNESCO member to help out the rural areas... etc.
State or Country: South Korea
School: The best in Korea. But only has 50 students going abroad this year. Really competitive(The average SAT I is over 1500! everyone's crazy! That might include me though).
Ethnicity: Asian(Korean)
Gender: Male
Other Factors: Well, my counselor didn't like me. I started to get ready for going to an American school too late( I started the day I took the PSAT last year which would make it about a year now). I got really ugly scores on that PSAT of course( I think it was 180, PSAT to SAT I was 1200). I hadn't studied English for 10 years until then so I had enough trouble with my SATs that I couldn't dream of taking any APs. Plus, my school doesn't have AP courses so I was left without choice. My counselor told me that Princeton said it wasn't sure about my abilities cuz I've been studying for only a year now. I can't study two or three years before my counselor updates the recommendations in a couple days so I can say I'm doomed.

Princeton is definately still my first choice but I gotta be realistic and seriously get prepared for other schools. Good luck for everyone else who has gotten deferred! I'm sure Princeton and a bunch of other great schools will accept you all for RD :)
Oh, yeah, and I've still haven't got my deferral letter. Do any of you know why? Everyone else here got them on the 13th.
