Princeton 2019 SCEA Hopefuls Thread

I just hope we all get accepted :/

Watching you guys complain about grades is very funny, considering the number of B’s (by your standards) I have on my transcript. The grading system here is so tough that it is recommended that a score of 80% on our transcripts be converted to 95% in US schools, and a score of 70 to 85. Out of about 250 000 students who sit for final exams every year, barely 150 to 200 get all A’s. That should put how tough it is to get an A in context.

If Princeton does not know this, or does not have the conversion table… I’m doomed. But it’s all good, we’ll see in four days, seventeen hours and forty two minutes.

@LukeBK‌ where are you from?

@justlyfe8 I’m from Ghana

The foreign transcripts translation list is found here: http://www.uft.org/files/attachments/evaluating-foreign-transcripts.pdf

It’s for high schools in New York State, but I read somewhere that that’s what most universities use

Is it just me or does it seem like US grading is a whole lot more inflated than other countries (i.e. a 95 in the US is like a 80 in most countries…)

For the question about a letter from a Senator:

If you interned in the Senator’s office or otherwise worked with him directly, such that he can provide firsthand knowledge of your character, quality of work, etc., then that can be useful.

If he doesn’t know you personally, then it’s completely useless.

@ingoditrust Wow, just today, so that means all of the decisions aren’t complete yet. If you don’t get in at least you will know you were soooo close and will probably have a decent chance in the RD round! Did you self report your scores on the CA? Maybe that is why they asked? Perhaps if you don’t self report they get suspicious as to the reason you would conceal them?

Yeah I’m confused…ingoditrust did you not self report your AP scores on commonapp?

Anyways, it’s not like AP scores will push an applicant over the border from being deferred to accepted.

@FCCDAD‌ Okay, no it was just a letter recognizing me on an accomplishment. I have that accomplishment listed as an EC, so I will just add “received letter from Senator” in the description - can’t hurt, can it? :)

@hopefulperson‌, @Ambitious19‌, @planner03‌ I actually did not self report my test scores on CA; since SAT scores are officially reported, and my AP scores were dismal, I opted not to report any test scores. I may feel this question may have been facilitated by sending my first marking period grades yesterday. Do you think I’m on the cusp? I feel less hopeful seeing as my APs are not even close to acceptable.

Ingoditrust: None of us are admissions officers, so we can’t give you an accurate answer! But it probably means that you are not eliminated yet.

Getting a bit nervous, since my counselor hasn’t told me if she got requests for anything. I think it’d be interesting to see (after Monday) how results match up with who got contact from Princeton after sending their applications.

I don’t think there’s much of a correlation, but we’ll find out Monday. I got no follow-up emails or contact from Princeton - including confirmation of financial aid or grade requests etc. I really don’t think it’s worsening my chances though - the whole thing is a crapshoot for sure, but I talked with my counselor and he really thinks its nothing to worry about.

Don’t know if anybody mentioned this before.
How many early action applicants were deferred and then accepted during the regular decision round this year?

@Ambitious19‌ I read in “A is for Admissions” that having good AP test scores can help push up a borderline candidate. It boosts their Academic Index.

I believe the admit rate for deferred candidates in the spring is about the same as that for the general RD population… correct me if I am wrong :)

@ilovethecity I guess, but when you’re applying to a school like Princeton, during the early round, a good portion of candidates will have 5’s on at least 5 AP tests (for those whose schools offer AP). I don’t think the OP’s AP scores will make too much of a difference. Of course, they won’t hurt either because they’re definitely solid scores.

Hello everyone! I am also among the many lurkers keeping tabs on this thread, and I wanted to extend my thanks for all the information and encouragement you all have provided. I hope the best for all of you!

Something that I wanted to contribute: Around the time first quarter grades were discussed, I had requested my counselor to send in first quarter grades if he could. Once they were sent, a Princeton representative promptly responded saying that the grades were added to my file. I think this goes to show that applications may still be in the evaluation process and certain information (grades, AP scores, etc.) can still be helpful or hurtful toward us. Whatever the deal is, we only have five more days to go; may the odds be ever in your favor!

IMO if Princeton wants something for admissions for whatever reason they’ll contact you/your counselor but if they feel your app is complete without it they won’t and it’s nothing to worry about. The kid who got in SCEA from my school last year didn’t get any further contact after he submitted his app/PFAA + tax forms.
