Princeton A.B vs B.S.E

I am applying early to Princeton, but I'm still undecided about whether I should apply as an arts major (physics) or an engineering major (mechanical). For B.S.E., there's an engineering essay that I'm slightly struggling with. Does anyone know how this essay will affect my application? I have a strong math and science background with some engineering and research school/summer activities, so I can manipulate it to suit my needs.

For those who had experience with the engineering essay, what are your recommendations? How did you include your engineering major and certificate(s)?

Or should I just be COMPLETELY honest and apply as undecided with no engineering essay.

Thanks so much!!

My son wrote his engineering essay from the perspective of how his love of both math/science and social justice fit together with the work Princeton engineering students had done/are doing. He made reference to specific projects that he had researched in his essay. However this is just one example of how you might approach the essay. I think in his grad year nearly 1/5 of students who were admitted were originally looking to go the BSE route. Many have since switched to other concentrations. Admissions officers know that a number of students will change their concentration during their first or even second year so the area of interest you indicate is less important than it might be at other schools who admit students into specific majors/concentrations. Even AB students can switch to BSE during their first year if they have the right preparation to do so.

All of that is to say that there really isn’t a “right” answer to your question. Admissions officers are most likely looking to see what you can contribute to the Princeton community as a whole. This might come in the form of athletics, music and the arts, research, debate or a whole host of other things. Being undecided isn’t a problem, but admissions will want to see where you excel and what you bring to the school.

@Cantiger thank you so much!
