Princeton and First Generation Student

Hello, I wanted to know, how does Princeton define first generation students? I have not been very clear in understanding this. However, no one in my family has ever finished college; however, my parents attended for one year but the schools no longer have any record of them being there. Other than that one year, no one in my family has ever attended college. I would like to know how Princeton would view this?

Hey look! Diversity!

I am not sure if you are being serious or humorous?

They would view this as first generation if your parents did not complete college.

Thank you kkamll. Would this apply to every school I have applied too?

Generally yes I believe so. I’m in pretty much the same situation. Both my parents attended the local community college but both dropped out and I’m a first generation college student as well.

Well, that is good. Do you know if chances increase for acceptance when knowing this fact?

In theory it shouldn’t give you an advantage or a disadvantage. In practice it’ll probably give you a slight advantage. Not enough to make or break you, though, considering the size of the applicant pool.

Oversimplistic

Do you know if coming from a state that sends very few people to Ivy League schools give me an advantage? I come from Alabama in a city where no one has ever went to an Ivy League school as far as I can trace back. Last year we had only three people go to Princeton and those three people were one of the very few who applied.

LOL.

Sorry that was definitely a sentence structure error. I mean that if you look on Princeton’s geography sheet, there were only three people accepted from Alabama last year. If you continue to trace back on thee sheets, the highest I have ever seen was about 5. My city or county whichever you want to consider it, has never had anyone. Those people all came from other cities.
