Princeton ED Lounge

ouch, that sucks... i was planning to send in a cd but i just got the princeton paper app yesterday... didn't notice the earlier date until i read it here. I was supposed to have the recording done last week but got sick... c'est la vie, i guess.

i heard that athletes get to find out early whether they get in or not, a kid in my class found out today that he was accepted.

lol athletes ARE basically accepted. at ivies, contrary to most people's beliefs, the application doesnt really to the ad coms opr the admissions people. the coaches doing the recruitment usually get it. if you get the recruitment papers and are basically offered to be recruited u are in

ugh... why didn't my parents have me start tennis at 5 instead of piano?!?!?!?!??!

ditto -_-"

Not always, though...someone I know was recruited by Harvard for swimming and then got rejected. Still, maybe it's b/c he was in a "minor" (i.e. non-money-making) sport.

Kebree-- My portfolio was entirely representational, mainly because that's what the curriculum at my art school emphasizes. If you ask me, I think an art committee would be more impressed with a portfolio of well-done representational pieces just because they require such an advanced level of technique to do well. If you have a mastery of representational, abstract should come easy.

As a final note, I looked at the link of your portfolio. It's top notch. So don't worry. :)

hi all,
I have yet to start work work on my essays and 1 teacher reco. However ,i hav school holiday over the entire next week and hope to finish it then,do you think there is enough time?

i certainly hope so..I'm only 3/4 done with one of the small essays...haven't started the others, and I'm taking 16 hours at a university....this next couple of weeks will be fun, I can tell you.

Why do I procrastinate when it comes to things like this? I always finish homework early, but something about "Your life in 500 words" is a little daunting. Yeah, that has to be it.

i'm finished with all my essays but i heard that the little question about what you did the past two summers had a word limit... there's no word limit indicated on my princeton supplement to the common app- where did you guys get "250"? (from the other essays?)

on the princeton app (this 60 second thing is annoying)...

Princeton states a 250 word limit on the online application for the "summer essay."

My brother went to the admissions office and asked them about the summer question. If you ARE using the paper application, your answer should fit into the space allotted

but i am done with 3 essays. sad thing is my optional essay is still better than my main long one...except once my main long one is finished its a stronger point whooo.

is EVERYONE at the suggested word lengths? 250, 250, 500? cuz mine are definitely like 310, 300, and 680 lol

and is there a word limit for the optional?

The one thing I'm proud of is that I finished my essays about a month ago. They are 275, 311, 587, and 549 (the optional) and 209 (the summer). I don't think the optional has a limit.

Can you even fit 250 words into that space? I'm using the PDF version b/c I don' t trust the online one (it keeps cutting parts of answers...even when I'm under the word limit). The space seems too small for even 250 words. Oh well.

Also, to those of you who sent Visual Art portfolios, did you send slides or CD-ROM versions? I sent a CD b/c I could fit more (I put about 50-55 works on it in folders titled "Oil Paintings," Watercolors," and "Drawings").

I don't think I'll do an optional essay...I'm attaching an activities/plans/experiences sheet (about 3 pages but REALLY organized) on the optional form instead, just to go into a bit more detail about certain things. I had some explaining to do about my unorthodox education :)

The space is probably for 100 words. You aren't spose to go into too much depth of what you have been doing. Just the basic gist, probably about 2 sentences or 3 sentences for each summer. My friend's application from last year was about 4 sentences total for that question. 2 for each. and he got in so i dont think they are looking for anything much longer than that space allotted

Which did you guys pick?

They say it is not a definite commitment, but how do they place students into the degree programs if they are admitted? Is it based on whatever they have selected on their app? or is there an 'official sign up' foir which degree and major you want to go into once you attend?

No, that's just to determine what your plan is (plus all BSE candidates have to write an extra statement). I'm sure they aren't going to hold you to it. I picked AB--no danger of any change there, I can tell you--but I'm sure you can change later. If you change from AB to BSE you may have to write the statement then, but I have no idea. ABer's declare majors at end of sophmore year. Not sure about BSEer's.

my essays are

483 words for 500 word essay
280 words for 250
280 words for 250
800 words for optional

i asked the assistance director of admissions about the optional area.. she said if you want, you can attach an extra essay. but honestly, from her tone, i think the area is meant for ppl to add a note to explain any peculiarity.. not so you can add another essay.. i mean they already ask for three....

for me, she wanted me to add a note saying that i am auditing my courses at the university instead of taking them for credits b/c it cost too much otherwise...

i think that's the sorta thing they want you to put there.... not a 800 word essay.

Yay, guys, I'M BACK! I feel so much better now. The one thing that I'm dissatisfied about with this board is that new replies go to the end of the thread instead of to the beginning...bah, whatever. But I'm very excited to be able to converse with everyone again, especially philntex, who has slowly but surely become my favorite mutual Princeton obsessee.

I finished my journalism portfolio last night after going to an all-day journalism conference and getting mucho inspired. I'm very happy with it. All of my counselor and teacher reqs are in, and I'm finished with all but one 250 word essay and the anything else essay...let's see...need to print my resume, get my mom to do the fin. aid form, and get my new SAT II scores on Thursday, and that will be it!! Mental run-down, forgive me for being so OCD. Less than 60 days remain :) Oh, oh, oh!!!

Love to you all.
