Are the admissions rates for the BSE program at princeton higher for girls than for guys?

Yes, although of course they're not going to publish it officially anywhere, obviously since girls have always been underrepresented, you will get a slight boost in your application if you are a girl interested in engineering, rather than say, English or sociology or something. But of course this is only true if you have the classes, the grades and the ECs all engineering-related to back it up.

I am very interested in engineering...I definitely have the classes and the grades etc. but my SAT IIs in that area are...well...abysmal. I put down Chemistry as a major instead, but I could still do engineering and write the essay.

Any thoughts? (when i say abysmal i don't mean like omgz750, i mean 670 on Math I and II and 680 on chem :-x) I have A's in these classes despite the scores.

anyone at all?

^ i think they'd understand that you had an "off day" if you otherwise ace the class. :P and anyways, if you get in for chem and decide to go for chemEng later i don't think the switch will be that hard provided you're not failing anything.

haha ok, that's good to know.

freshman admissions-wise though, which major do you think would be less competitive for a girl?

umm, i think if you write a good engineering essay, you have more of a chance because they're looking for female engineering students. but if you don't want to write the extra essay and you have otherwise excellent grades and a strong application, you stand a decent chance of getting into chemistry (which i imagine more girls apply for compared to chemEng).
