Princeton Essay

In one of the other threads a poster had written as follows

<<however, other="" schools="" like="" princeton="" might="" to="" see="" an="" essay="" more="" focused="" on="" academics="" or="" job="" experiences.="" what="" did="" your="" parents="" and="" siblings="" not="" about="" the="" essay?="">></however,>

Does Princeton focus on academics essay? So, if applying to Princeton, should the common app essay focus on academics? Or are you referring to the Princeton supplement essay?

In general, does a common app essay need to focus on academics?

Thanks

Hi, I’ve been reading books on how to write personal statements, and my AP Eng Lang teacher focused on grading our personal statements after we finished the AP test in May. So are you talking about the topic/subject of the essay? Rarely ever have I read sample essays that were about school-related subjects. A lot of them were based on family issues or special camps they did and how they changed, or just simply who they were based on their interests. I don’t know if P-ton especially likes academic essays; I really can’t imagine how one would write one and make it sound interesting unless you’re talking about your passion in some sort of subject. I have never heard a P-ton representative say that they like academic essays better than personal ones, and I’m sure a LOT of the students who get in write about more interesting topics. So to answer your last question No.

Edit: excuse abbreviations and bad grammar.

Thanks. So, a passion in any particular subject - is it a good choice for common app essay? Or is there a better place in the common app to elaborate on that. Say for eg - a research project initiated independently. Where can it be mentioned in the app?

I meant if you look at the Princeton supplement, it says something like: “how have you spent your past two summers?” and in parentheses it says jobs, etc. You’re supposed to write about something your passionate about for the common app… so this could be about why you love microbiology so much or about an event that really changed you/helped shape your worldviews.

There’s the EC essay part, but there’s not much room to expand upon your topic if you want to go really in depth because of the 1000 character limit. (It’s like only 2 paragraphs) If you are really passionate about your independent research project, I would say include it under Common App topic 1 (a significant achievement) or else the Princeton “summer” supplement question (if that’s when you conducted your research).

Thanks so much for your good advise!

However, what surprises me is MOST of the common app main essays focusses on family events, personality etc thus making it interesting than about passions, research etc.

That is why was not sure if the essay topic would be odd since it talks more about the research, etc than about an interesting even or about the personality.

Based on the above, already started (close to completion) the essay with another topic and so not sure if it should be scrapped off and redone…

But how about additional information upload section? Can this research information abstract (just bullet points) be included there (as it does not fit anywhere else)??? (please say YES :-)

Help and advise appreciated
