Princeton FAQ: Get your questions answered by current students

What does operations research and financial engineering major teach you?
what are the likely careers for this type of degree?

I heard that you can’t use AP credits to take one course fewer right? You can only use them to take a more advanced course? If so, is it smart to take a more advanced course, considering the competition?

what is all this about GRADE DEFLATION!?!?! is it that serious? does it actually hinder anyone from getting in med school or law school?
Im very curious

Im looking @ psychology, or neurobiology as a major…MAYBE…also looking at IR & political science (sorry 4 being all over the place)

(btw guys, pretty sure #201 was sarcasm)

I’ve just been accepted to the class of 2014 and I’m getting good aid.
Princeton has estimated personal expenses to be ~ $3,600.
Is it a good/generous/bad estimate? I like partying, but not way too much.
Thanks!

@not_really: Partying at the eating clubs is always free for non-members (unless you ask a member who you’re not romantically involved with to “invite” you to a formal event), so that “personal expenses” budget is meant solely for other purposes.

Okay I guess I put it wrongly. When you say other purposes, I assume you mean books + trips to NYC(if you do that) + generally chilling out on campus+ any other little stuff you might want to get hold of.
So, it is a fair estimate if that’s the case?
Is this question getting too vague? =P

honeyjay, regarding the Princeton grade deflation hindering you from getting into med school, here you go, you might want to read this:

How many certificate programs does the average Princeton student go through? I want to major in one and do additional 2 or 3 but is it too much?

i know pton banned secret socieites, but i’m sure they still exist…any intel on them?

jb, yes, there is a secret secret society, but if I tell you now please don’t let anyone know, ok?

its called ***The 21 Club ***and is active only during home football games

and only 21 members are allowed each year in total.

so shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…

For AP credits, I read this page:
[AP Credit Overview - Advanced Placement and Advanced Standing](http://www.princeton.edu/pub/ap/)

but it wasn’t very clear-- let’s say I take AP chem, do I HAVE to go to a higher level chem class, or could I spend the time taking another unrelated course? If I do that, my science requirement would be still fulfilled right?

Also, if I take a AP not listed in the accepted credits table, could I still get around/talk to somebody and skip that course?

what do most princeton students do during the summer? just internships?

How is the pre-med program at Princeton? Unbiased opinion please.

I wonder if an international student have any real chances of becoming a member of the University Press Club (were there any before?). I am also interested in the process of admission and what is the percentage of admitted candidates?

@Chairman Guo:

1 certificate is easy, 2 is doable, 3 is stretching it a little but definitely possible if you plan ahead, depending on which ones you’re getting.

@ib612:

Yes, internships are by far the most popular thing to do during the summer. Some people also choose to study abroad, and some stay here and do research (or do research at another university). Princeton does not offer summer classes with the exception of the Freshman Summer Institute, which is the summer before freshman year.

Hum 216-219,

Really want to take it, a factor that helped me choose Princeton over a few other schools.

How was it for those who have taken it?

Is it hard to get accepted into seeing as they only take 49 students or so…

Oooooo. How can I join the 21 club?

Was there some sort of catastrophe in Princeton’s past that prompted Fire Safety to become so prevalent on campus? I mean, Princeton’s the only place I’ve ever seen that doesn’t allow people to post anything on doors or leave anything in hallways (other than trash bins) or prop doors open because all “means of egress” must be recognizable as such and must remain unimpeded at all times? I would figure that people who can get into or teach at Princeton can probably recognize a door even if it has a few sheets of paper on it. The guys I stayed with at Preview said someone in their hall got slapped with a fine for attaching a giant white posterboard with the words “means of egress” (and equivalent sayings in Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, Russian, Latin, and Braille) written on it to the door to his room. It’s no big deal (I enrolled despite having been told about this), but it seems a little paranoid and sort of detracts from the college-like feel of some other places I’ve seen.

iCalculus, do you know the history behind the 21 Club at Princeton?

you might not want to be part of it if you knew…ha!

I know that it was around in the '70’s and 80’s, but I don’t know whether it still exists.
