Princeton FAQ: Get your questions answered by current students

Should I get a mac or pc? What proportion of students have macs?

Regarding the Fire Safety issue.

Yes, it’s annoying. But it really doesn’t affect you after the first 20 minutes.

The strict and stupid policies allegedly are due to stringent NJ State laws, which were passed due to an incident at another college in the state where having a blocked means of egress led to serious injury or death.

So blame Seton Hall for your inability to put posters on the door.

Also, they’ll generally just give you a warning the first time unless you’re acting like a jerk who just wants to stick it to the man for no good reason.

There are a lot of students with macs, and a lot with pcs. It varies somewhat by subject, but unless you want to study film or something like that, either works. Pretty much all the computer clusters have both and there’s support for both on campus.

Can I get an A.B. degree and earn a certificate from the B.S.E. department at the same time?

p.s. I know that that was probably worded very incorrectly, so I apologize! lol

Yeah… and vice versa too. For example, there are many econ majors who do the EMS certificate as well.

is there a Chase bank near the campus?

Can I switch to engineering if I’ve indicated on my app that I want to major with an A.B degree? Does the choice of major influence the admissions process?

Well till tenth grade I’ve attended a different school but now I’m at a different school ( I’m an hs senior). The teachers at my previous school know me thoroughly and will be able to provide a much more insightful recommendation. So can I get them to write my recommendations or do I need teachers from the final two years of schooling to write my recommendations.

^ Interesting Question! Does the intended major affect admission? For example, a biology (premed) student have a more difficult time getting accepted because it is such a common focus?

Engineering is supposed to be slightly easier if the student has otherwise shown interest in that field, but there is little different beyond that.

YellowDaisies, it is my opinion that intended major coupled with race/gender can affect your chances.

Are there any sports at Princeton that a total newcomer can join?

I know that there are intramural sports, but is there intramural horseback riding and/or dancing? Those are the two sports that I really want to participate in, but I only have swimming experience :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, does Princeton have a polo team?

Thanks for your help :)

ray121988…could you elaborate on that please? I’m not sure exactly what you are intending to get across :)

For example, women who indicate an intention to major in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering would receive a boost according ray121988’s mentality because they are under-represented in those fields.

@Silveturtle, why do you think that engineering would be slightly easier to get? Here in my own country people even without the slightest aptitude for engineering or math or science take it up to just get a good job.

Will I be at a disadvantage if I do not take Chem or Bio in my senior year? They are both HL double block classes, but I chose to do HL Physics instead, which is only one period, so that I could do an independent study at the university that I am passionate about- African Politics. Would I be at a disadvantage in the admission/collegiate process? Because I know how almost every high schooler has taken either Bio or Chem.

Thanks!

Princeton is generally not perceived by most applicants as a strong school in engineering. Plus, a Princeton admissions officer hinted that it is a bit easier, as long as a student appears to be genuinely interested in engineering. I do not have data that support this, however.

This is a bit sketchy, but would it be possible to smuggle my pet snake in and set up his 20-gallon tank under the bed or something? When I visited, my host said she knew a couple of people who had pet snakes in their dorm rooms. Obviously, it’s not allowed, but how did they get away with it?

LOL at the above poster

What is the language placement test like? Is it at an SAT II level?

Dude, I’m so serious, haha. I’m not sure I trust my mother to do a good job taking care of him.

A question on the language requirement. Is placement pretty accurate? Are students beginning a new language placed with students of the same caliber?
