Is the bicycle needed if a student lives in Whitman?

Do other parents plan to to pack winter clothing: coat, boots, etc? How cold would it be in November in NJ? We haven’t thought about Thanksgiving yet, one option of course would be to take the winter stuff then if S comes home for Thanksgiving.

Does one really need a fan in the dorm room in Sept/Oct at Whitman?

i know this question has been discussed before…

are there computer clusters in dodge osborn hall of wilson? or would i have to walk outside of my building to another building in wilson to print something out? i was debating whether or not i should bring my own printer. thanks in advance!

TigerMom: A bicycle is never strictly “needed” by just about anyone (regardless of their dorm), but it is almost always a convenience. Send your child off with a peacoat, but boots, parkas, etc probably are not necessary - provided that he comes home for Thanksgiving (or Fall Break).

You’ll probably want the fan; buy one at the U-Store.

I asked this in the parent thread as well,:

If you ship stuff ahead, what’s best? UPS directly to the dorm, or via USPS to the PO Box in Frist?

It seems much more convenient to have stuff shipped directly to the dorm (especially if you ship something big like a television), but maybe that’s not allowed or safe. Is everything supposed to be shipped to Frist?

I mostly used the printer in Wilcox, but my roommate also had one, which was nice when i wanted to print a few pages late at night and didn’t feel like walking outside. From Whitman a bike wouldn’t really be necessary - everything is pretty close by. I believe Whitman is air conditioned so probably wouldn’t need a fan.

whitman is air conditioned, but when I was there they did not turn the ac on, since “it wouldn’t be fair since most of the rest of the campus doesn’t have ac.” It was sort of a nasty surprise since the ac had been running all summer while they were finishing up construction. It might have changed since then with the existence of new butler, although the university is also trying to save money so maybe not.

thanks for the information… that solved the mystery, because when my daughter was at whitman for a summer program a couple of years ago, she had a/c. We thought we didn’t need a fan, but when we called housing office asking if there is a/c or not, they said no…

thanks for the information about the printer and the bike, they came in time for us to make some decisions :-)

Do you know if a/c was turned on at whitman last year or not? Of courst that doesn’t mean they will do the same this year, especially because of the budget cuts… but at least if they didn’t turn on last year, there is slim chance they will turn on this year :-(

I have a question about books. Since freshmen will not get their schedule until they have orientation, do they need to purchase their books at the bookstore, or do the professors give them a few days so that they could purchase them online for a cheaper rate? I know my son will probably just go the bookstore because he will want to be prepared, but sometimes even with 2nd day shipping you can get books cheaper at amazon.

@ProudNJMom: You’ll meet with your academic adviser and select courses a few days before classes begin, so you’ll be able to get those books from Amazon, especially since all students get Amazon Prime for free. Classes generally begin on Thursdays (meaning a class will not meet more than once the first week), so you’ll also have the weekend to wait for books to arrive. In all honestly, it usually doesn’t matter if you’ve purchased the books yet for the first full week or so. Also, Labyrinth Books keeps a list of all the books each course requires (along with their associated prices). What I like to do is check the prices of the books I need on Amazon, trot over to Labyrinth, compare prices, and then buy some books on Amazon and some from Labyrinth, depending on which one offers a specific book for less.

@ripemango: Mathey and Wilson each have one, haven’t paid attention to the others.

Last fall I bought books from the bookstore, ordered them on amazon, and then returned them to the bookstore when the ones from amazon came. As long as you return them before add/drop ends you get a full refund, and that way you can have your books right away.
If you have a common room, you’ll definitely want to coordinate with your suitemates to bring / buy some furniture. For my 8 person suite, we bought a futon, which has definitely proved to be a worthwhile investment.

I’m in the US Navy right now, i have two years left in service then i would love nothing more than to be a student at Princeton. My grades in high school left a bit to be desired but I’m so much more on top of things now a days. is it even possible for me to have a shot? what kinds of things can i do to get me in? I’m determined as hell and i can do anything asked of me to get in.

btw my interests for pton are experimental physics

Do kids often leave campus to go see concerts? My D thinks that it’d be easy to go to a concert at the Wellmont in Montclair, but I’m not so sure. I’d rather her stay on campus. Am I being overprotective or do kids take the trains and do this sort of thing regularly?
