@lahore97 Call the admissions office.
I have a 2100 on my SAT with a 770 on CR, 750s in my SAT2s, Straight A*s on all my transcript. (physics, math, chem, leadership, robotics, eng lang, german lang) . Ive invented this transistor-less inverter. I work with the government for the electrification of off-grid rural villages in my country (thats what my common app essay was about). Ive won regional archery and shooting competitions. Ive also created my robotics, astronomy, research (about the viability of solar energy in off grid sector) organisations. Done tons of internships and have a class rank of 1/685, and GPA 4. Attended Columbia summer program, my columbia professor approved my inverterâs design. Do you think Iâve got a shot at Princeton?
Hi! I am a newly admitted student looking to get more familiar with the environment at Princeton. Check out my thread here:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/princeton-university/1759420-do-you-think-ill-fit-somewhat-well-at-princeton.html#latest
No worries I got in. Thanks!
How is premed at Princeton? I know that the grade deflation policy has been eliminated, but it still super hard to get a 3.7+ GPA. I know that med schools can be super picky when it comes to grades.
^Same. I realize that some medical schools take into account [to some degree] the rigor of a Princeton education, but I also want to know what the workload is for being pre-med. As in, really, how hard is it? Is it grey hair-inducing, stressful as heck hard work? Or is it actually manageable even with all of the activities required to be pre-med? Want to commit so badly to this amazing institution, but so worried in the face of a conditional acceptance through a medical program. It seems like a risk that may seriously impact my happiness, but I want an actual studentâs perspective rather than my gathered notions.
Hi, for application to the School of Engineering, would a letter from a Math teacher and a letter from a Physics teacher be sufficiently âdifferent areas of studyâ?
They are considered different areas of study - my son had his teachers for the same two subject areas write letters of recommendation.
Thanks @Cantiger !
@fretfulmother S successfully used those exact teachers for his LOR as well.
@planner03 - thank you so much. The situation is - you might know that MIT requires one âmath/sciâ and one âhumanitiesâ letter. So I wasnât quite sure how Princeton Engineering would look at it. (On their page it says âdifferent disciplinesâ but I didnât know how to interpret that - for example, would Chemistry and Physics be âdifferentâ? I would have thought not.)
The advantage of the Math and Physics is that DS had the M teacher 10 and 12 (intended) and the P teacher 9 and 11.
@fretfulmother lol, isnât it crazy trying to read between the lines? S had a great humanities recommender that wrote his MIT LOR but he was reluctant to use her across the board because she was a 10th grade teacher and he read/heard that you should only use 11/12th grade teachers. I am sure we all overthink this process way too much, but that is easy for me to say now!
@planner03 - thank you for the kind empathy, too. Yes, itâs hard not to go a bit crazy about all of this. Can I ask, did your son get into both MIT and Princeton Engineering? And if so, can you elaborate more on choosing Princeton (since this is the âask about Princetonâ forum)? My DS is considering SCEA.
Edit to add: if you feel a PM is more appropriate, and are willing, that is also fine with me.
Sorry if Iâm interrupting any conversations but can anyone tell me if you need to send your AP scores in to Princeton during the college application process? Would not self reporting scores look suspicious? (Iâm planning to apply this fall early action by the way)
@vanillabean22 you never send AP scores to schools during the application process, strictly self reporting on the CA.
Oh whoops, I meant self reporting. Is it better for an applicant to report their scores even if they arenât stellar?
Hey guys,Is it Princeton a good place for future architect? How much attention do pay for drawing aspect?
@michaela99 It is most helpful if you do not ask the same question four times on different threads. Other students who may have similar questions have difficulty tracking responses when they are scattered all over the place.
To answer your question, my son has several friends who are in architecture at Princeton. Itâs a demanding but rewarding area of concentration from what he has said. It sounds as though his friends are very positive about their experiences to date overall.
Piggybacking onto the Princeton Engineering LOR, do you think I could get recs from my Latin teacher (good relationship and writes stellar recs), our nationally-recognized Chem teacher, and one from either my rabbi or AP Econ teacher/golf coach and have that fly? Or do the specifically want Physics/Math (our physics and math teachers are loons).
Also does anybody know if weâve figured out if applying for the BSE increases your chances? Iâm actually interested in pursuing it, but if it helps to list it too I might as well.
@codemachine - as a mom of a fellow applicant, this is what I think the answers are:
- For Princeton's LOR you need two distinct departments for the letters. I think it makes sense to have a math or science person if you are applying to BSE, but I don't remember reading that requirement.
- For MIT's LOR in case you were remembering that, you need a "quantitative" subject like any math or science, and one non-quantitative (e.g. Latin is fine - I myself used Latin as that one in 1989 successfully LOL).
- For both, in the case of Princeton's BSE, you need two SAT Subject tests that include a math and a science - which for Princeton, must be Physics or Chem.
- I don't think any of the schools differentiate for LOR or scores between physics and chemistry.
- I think if you're female, BSE might increase your chances. My guess is not, otherwise.
- You don't need a third letter (Rabbi or Coach or Econ) - but it is permitted if it will "tell them something new" but I don't think it can be sent by Naviance with the others, if your HS uses that.
