A lot of students are typically on campus during reading week so that they can focus and study. But they don’t have to be on campus since most students don’t have class during that time. The only classes that are often in session during reading week are language classes (and it depends on the language), which most freshmen will be taking. It just depends.
Hello! In comparison to other school, how big a role would you say standardized testing plays in Princeton admissions? While I still have a good score, standardized testing remains the weaker part of my application. Does Princeton look at these scores as a deciding factor more than other Ivy Leagues? I know some colleges are trying to lean away from only using testing as indicators, but has anyone seen this in action/ heard about Princeton’s take on this? Thanks!
I believe scores are important but above a certain threshold (low-mid 700’s for each section) there is little advantage to trying for perfect scores. If your scores are below 700 you should consider retaking them.
How important are the essays for admission? I have a good test score, lower GPA, good recs and decent ec’s but I feel like I really shine in my essays.
@currylord A high GPA with good course rigor is most important. After good grades, high test scores and interesting ECs, comes the essays. A good essay is vital at elite admissioms and helps make you memorable to the adcoms.
Hello!
I am thinking of submitting an arts supplement. I am a songwriter, and writing and performing the songs at local events have been a major part of my high school life. However, Princeton does not list original songs (that is not classical compositions) as one of the approved formats. Also, due to financial restrictions, my song recordings would not be the best quality. Is it worth sending them my music?
Is a 740CR770M730W + a 96.4/100 GPA competitive enough for princeton?
Oh, and 800 on both M2 and PH subject tests
@icarus29 Yes you would be considered a viable candidate based on your stats. Given that Princeton utilizes a holistic admissions process, you would need a number of other criteria such as EC’s, essays, and quite frankly some luck to secure an admissions offer. Best wishes!
Great, Thanks! @Cantiger
anyone has trouble to retrieve CSS info to FAFF? It told me it could not find CSS for the right ID though I submitted. Thanks.
If we applied early action, is there a chance that we might have to do an interview? And when do they usually occur?
If there are available alumni interviewers in your area, you will be offered the opportunity to have an interview. Keep an eye on your junk mail just in case correspondence should be rerouted there. Interviews would typically happen near the middle or end of November. If you are not offered an interview, it has nothing to do with your application and the likelihood of an admissions offer, only whether there are alumni interviewers available, and it will not be counted against you.
I’m applying to Princeton using the common application. I want to submit my music supplement But, it asks for a Temporary PIN number. I submitted my application on the 1st of november and i have not received my Temporary pin nor did they ask for it on common app. Guys please guide me how to get one. I have even emailed them but they didn’t reply. What should i do?
I have a few questions.
- Is it true that Princeton only considers the highest 2 SAT subject test scores? What if I put 4 scores on my common app? And does that mean I should only send them 2 out of 4 of my scores (via college board score choice), or still just send all of my subject test scores?
- What exactly is a "non-academic" LOR? Like from a PE teacher? And does it actually make a difference if I send another LOR in? I suspect it won't unless the letter of rec is groundbreaking.
- For the Additional Document section, can I send in a picture of my karate first-degree black belt certificate even though I got it when I was only 9? (I didn't include it anywhere in the common app)
- Should I upload a document showing that I dealt with asthma during junior year, and maybe explain my situation quickly (write a paragraph on the document before scanning and uploading)? My grades weren't the best junior year, so I feel like it would help a lot. But I feel like its unimportant since a lot of kids have asthma, and its not exactly life-changing like cancer. Plus, it may come off as desperate and look like I'm just trying to find an excuse.
- If I forgot to include some AMC scores, do I type it on a word doc and upload that? I wasn't provided with any proof of my scores, just told by email. And should I include my scores if I got: 9th Grade - AMC 10A, 82.5 9th Grade - AMC 10B, 94.5 10th Grade - AMC 12A, 76.5 11th Grade - AMC 12A, 76.5
Nothing amazing (didn’t qualify for AIME), but considering no one in my school has even heard of AMC, I think they’re pretty good. Should I take out the repeat scores and keep only one (10th grade and 11th grade scores are the same), and should I omit my lower 9th grade score and just send: 9th grade - AMC 10B, 94.5, 10th Grade - AMC 12A, 76.5??? Or just take it all out?
- And If I do include my AMC scores, I not only update via the portal but I also separately email them? Do I just say "I forgot to include this information in my common app), and then list the scores?
Sorry for so many (unnecessarily long) questions, just kind of confused about this part of the process. I wanna maximize my chances in any way I can :p.
bump?? I know I asked a lot, but maybe someone could help me with part of my question? (Specifically questions 3 and 4). It would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!
- Do not send unless karate is a current EC. Adcoms generally don't what you did before high school.
- I think you know not to send this either. If it truly affected your schooling, then ensure your guidance counselor adds it to their SSR they send to Princeton.
Last, try to stop worrying about your app. I know it is hard to apply and then wait, second guessing yourself all the while, but do you really believe uploading a 9 year old’s karate certificate will make the difference and get you in? My advice is stop worrying about Princeton and work on your other apps. If Princeton happens, great, if it doesn’t you’ll be prepared.

@psywar Yeah, sorry, that was a bit silly of me. So I suppose the AMC scores are useless as well? And I should send all my SAT subject test scores? (not just my highest 2)
And I’m not worrying, I was just making sure I’m representing myself in the best possible light.
But if what you said is true, then I’m done. Just gonna have to wait for the deferral.
@JuicyMango idk about the AMC scores, unless stellar I wouldn’t. What are your scores for all four SAT2s? If all over 750, you should send them all in. If above 700, it depends on the test.
@psywar Three of my SAT subject tests are above 750, but my Lit score is 710. But the percentile of my lit score is almost comparable to the 750+ SAT subject test scores.
My AMC scores weren’t enough to qualify me for AIME, but my worry is that if someone else from my school were applying to Princeton, I think including these scores might give me the edge because I know for a fact that no one else from my school took the tests.
But as you said, in the long run, I doubt it would matter.
