Questions about end of the school year, please, if anyone can help: how do we know when the student can come home (final exams? is there anything after finals?); when do the dorms close; when does dining close; is there storage available for rent for belongings; do parents usually accompany their kids coming home?
@fretfulmother Students may leave campus any time after their last exam before the winter break. Dorms remain open over the break and while most students leave campus, there are sometimes a few internationals that remain. Dining closes after dinner the Friday before the winter break starts and no dining services are offered over the break. Students may leave their belongings in their dorm. And we never accompanied our son home over that break - he found his way to the airport and flew home himself.
@Cantiger thank you! I actually meant in May.
@fretfulmother Well then! Letâs try this again! First off, I noted an error in my previous post. It should read, "Students may leave campus any time after their last CLASS (not exam) before the winter break. Everything else applies to the winter break.
Now regarding the end of year question: final exams appear to end on or about May 27 this year (quite late compared to other years!). I believe dorms will close right after the last day of exams, and dining at the same time, however Frist remains open for students to purchase meals. Storage is available on campus for international students but there are storage places on Rt 1 I believe for rent over the summer for domestic students. I have often seen parents helping their student with move out logistics (we did every year). I know of some students who stayed in their dorms to help work reunions after the exam period finished. The 2017 dates for reunions are June 1-4.
@cantiger - thank you! The issue this year is that we have a family wedding (unlikely DS would go, but DH and I would like to) on the Sunday of Mem-D weekend (is that the 29th or so?) which means everyone in the family wants to start making plans etc. I was hoping that there would be a way that DS could arrange for storage of most things and bring back a suitcase on the trainâŠis this not likely then? Thank you again so much
There are certainly options for storage in the Princeton area for the summer. Internationals can keep two boxes on campus for free but other students need to secure storage independently. Here is a link to the Princeton Student Agencies https://www.studentagencies.net/SearchResults.asp?Cat=45 Summer storage information wonât be available until spring so if you want to find other options Iâd suggest a google search for Princeton area storage. I know there are companies that will come and pick up if your son doesnât have access to a car.
thank you so much, @Cantiger !
We had a very good experience with Lackland Storage at 4140 US-1, Monmouth Junction, NJ 08852, a short drive north of campus.
Iâm curious:
Does Princeton University offer an option to attend as an undergraduate part time? Does Princeton allow someone to sign up for an individual course, paid out of pocket, with credit given?
Could someone register for an individual graduate course and receive credit? (paid out of pocket, of course)
Thank you.
@lsp2015 No.
Hi Princeton students! Iâve heard that Princeton has a near 100% rate for giving interviews to all applicants, but I still havenât been contacted and I live in an area where lots of people DO get contacted I was wondering if anyone who lives in a common-interview area was accepted without getting an interview. I contacted the admissions office to ask them if alumni are still interviewing, but they themselves donât setup interviews and their website says I shouldnât initiate contact with interviewers first. Any advice on what I should do?
Princeton has certainly tried to offer interviews to all applicants in the past however it isnât always possible. Living in an area with a lot of interviewers doesnât necessarily improve your chances of being offered an interview since it may also be an extraordinarily high applicant area as well. I know two Princeton interviewers and they told me they have until Feb 26th to submit their interview reports, so you may not receive an offer at this point. Rest assured that there is no negative impact on your application if you are not offered an interview opportunity. Itâs more likely that Princeton has seen a swell in applications again this year and simply do not have enough available alumni to do the interviews.
How strongly does Princeton recommend 4 years of foreign languages? I took three years of foreign languages and I didnât know that Princeton recommends 4 years of foreign language before senior year (this year). So this year, I took a lot of math and science courses but no foreign language. I passed the state proficiency test in that language last year with a 99, but I understand thatâs not the same thing as 4 years. I understand that I didnât do enough research beforehand and that Iâm completely at fault. How screwed am I?
@lemon415 @Cantiger - My daughter and the other few applicants to Princeton from her school just received emails yesterday that an alumnus will be contacting them shortly to set up an interview time. So I would believe the information about completing all reports by 2/26 may not be accurate. A while back I read, in an older thread, about a girl receiving a request for a Skype interview from a Princeton alumni about a week before decisions came out. But if you donât receive a request, try not to lose too much sleep over it.
@G8tr2mom Perhaps nit picky but what I actually wrote was that the two interviewers were told that they have until Feb 26th to complete their reports. This is in fact accurate for these two interviewers who I know well and have spoken to in person. I agree that this may not be a hard and fast date for all interviews for all applicants but what I suggested is that there is less likelihood of receiving a request for an interview after that date. There is no negative impact on the application of students who are not offered an opportunity for an interview, nor are interviews offered based on the strength of application, but it is a great opportunity to find out more about the university and campus life.
@Anonymous261 - A Princeton admissions officer told me they âunderstandâ that sometimes 4 years of a foreign language doesnât work out. It isnât a deal killer.
@Cantiger I just had my interview today. But itâs past 2/26. Does this mean that they wonât be accepting it or they donât care and just gave me an interviewer to meet their 100% rate?
@lemon415 The 2/26 date was the deadline for the interviewers I spoke with to submit their reports. If Princeton is still having alumni conduct interviews, I am certain they will continue to receive their reports. Frankly, these interviews make very little impact on your application. Their primary purpose as I understand it is to allow applicants to have a personal contact with the an alum and possibly to raise any possible significant flags (ie - extremely negative behavior in the interview).
Thank you for your insight! @Cantiger Really helped tremendously!
What happened to the RealTalk Princeton Tumblr page??? I miss it sooo much
