Princeton Gap Year Policy or Procedure

My S was admitted to Princeton yesterday. Now that he’s been admitted, he wants to take a gap year just to be free to explore other interests of his that he wasn’t able to devote to in the high school. No, he’s not interested in the Princeton’s “Bridge Year Program.”

It’s hard to find a straight-forward information about what the policy and the procedure is on this topic. Does anyone know about this?

You are right, there is very little about this on the redesigned admissions page.

There is a FAQ at https://admission.princeton.edu/faqs#application-process

“May students who are admitted defer enrollment to another year?”

Yes, but wouldn’t it be nice if they included some further information after “We recommend students request a deferral only after they are admitted and before May 10,” such as who or where to request? Well, I suppose I can request this when we visit during their “Preview” days in April.

I guess it would be nice. But maybe it’s just that simple and there is no big policy - e-mail admissions before May 10 and say you’re deferring, and don’t defer for another degree program.

I hope you’re right. I hope it’s as simple as sending the admissions an email with no questions asked procedure.

First of all, congratulations on your son’s admissions. Princeton is an amazing school!

Regarding deferral of enrolment, contact admissions and ask them what the procedure is. Yes it would be nice if they published procedures for this online but I can assure you that you will find people in admissions tremendously helpful and they will do what they can to accommodate your request.

@Cantiger - Okay, will do. Thanks.

Admissions people are tremendously helpful to accepted students :wink: Very true. Seriously, from my experience last year with my son, their whole attitude shifts when you call and identify yourself as someone accepted. It’s all hugs, kisses, and cotton candy during the sales period.

@ChartresBlue - Thanks, that’s good to know. :slight_smile:

Princeton is tremendously supportive of gap years, whether they be before or during your college career. I know so many people who have taken gap years for various reasons- art, sports, health, travel, etc.

@emtfxc - Thanks, that’s reassuring. I did call the admissions office at Princeton, and I was given the direct email to Dean of College Admissions to make the request. It’s been several days now since I emailed the dean but I haven’t received any response. I hope to get the official approval soon.
