Princeton Graded Essay

For the graded essay, my word count is 1,857 words (almost over double the word count of 1,000), however, it can fit on 5 pages if I use 11.5 font. It’s MLA format, Times New Roman, Double-Spaced with the only exception being the 11.5 font instead of 12. If I use 12 font, it goes over by one line onto a 6th page. Should I use 11.5 font, or will AOs count off for that? Also, how am I supposed to upload the paper with comments if my teacher only graded it as a physical copy? Do I have to send my teacher the file of my paper and have them digitally make comments? Sorry, I can’t find anything about it on Princeton’s page.

I quickly found it:

Scan to pdf. Stamp and an envelope will also work.

For the graded essay portion, Princeton says how the paper should be “submitted for a course, preferably English or history, that appears on the student’s official transcript from the last three years of secondary schooling.” The problem is that my English teachers in the past three years haven’t provided any constructive feedback in the past, and they left their comments online through Canvas (so I can’t access them anymore). Do you think that they would accept a paper from this year that was just graded?

Yes

Hey there I think you should obey the word limit provided. Also I don’t really know what they require. Am I supposed to write a random article or write another essay about myself??

@Efuanta They want a graded academic paper, either in English or history.

thanks

I just checked the FAQ for the graded paper submission and it specifically says there is no word count or page limit, but that “one to two pages is sufficient”. My son has no papers that are only 1-2 pages with a written grade on them so I’m glad there isn’t a limit…

Guys I need HELP!!!

I have 2 options to submit to Princeton:

(A) 25 page scientific paper on 1-year lab research I wrote with another student. A+ grade received.

or

(B) 5 page English paper which was written SO WELL but my class is hard as heck, so, B+ grade, I was the sole writer and it d The teacher comments are also complete trash she didn’t write one single positive thing.

I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!

@cuteraspberries Princeton specifically wants a paper in a humanities subject, so (B). If it’s really well written I don’t think the grade will matter so much. You don’t have any other papers, maybe from last year?

^^
I would go with the second one. I don’t think they will read all 25 pages and if the 5 page one is well-written, the grade shouldn’t matter.

@yucca10 @HYPopotamous yes! thank you I decided to go with that in the end. I asked my teacher for a re-take form so that I can make some minor edits and at least I can get the grade up into the A range.

Princeton states, “The admission office is more interested in the quality of the writing than the grade it received and encourages you to submit a graded written paper that shows your best efforts, regardless of the grade.” I got in with a graded paper from AP English that scored 4/9 (didn’t follow prompt, oops). I wouldn’t worry too much about the grade itself if you think it’s written well.

Or you could ask your teacher to make edits on Google Docs and then download as a Word File

I’m applying RD and I still don’t have my graded essay from my teacher, and since the deadline is the beginning of January, I won’t see him until it’s too late. I have his email but I don’t know that he will reply as he’s getting married this week and is very busy. Is the application deadline an absolute, or would I still be able to send it in a few days later without it hurting my chances?

@benanderson1001 I read that the deadline for common app plus princeton supp with the graded essay is due on the final deadline day, so it might be a risk especially since you can’t call to ask due to the holidays.

https://admission.princeton.edu/how-apply/application-dates-deadlines it says here that the graded paper is due on Jan 1st

I expect that Princeton would show a little leniency given the circumstances.

Hi @JLeto, where did you see that the recommendation is 5 pages and 1,000 words? I only saw that “one or two pages is sufficient” from the FAQ page. I was just wondering because I’m applying RD and I’m not sure how long my paper should be. Thank you!

@lemonlime13 I guess they updated it since the last time I looked. Either that or I just imagined it, but anyway, just trust what their site says now.
