Princeton Humanities Symposium

Sorry, this isn't actually related to college applications, but I thought this might be a good place to post it. Does anyone know how high school students go about applying for the yearly Humanities Symposium held at Princeton? My school has promised to nominate me if I can get some information together for them. Any past participants or anyone who knows anything, post here or PM me please!!

thanks,
jesi

My impression was that the University first selects the high schools that are allowed to send nominations. (When I went, it seemed like most, or at least many, people were from high-profile prep schools like Milton, Dalton, Andover and Collegiate, or really good publics like Chicago Lab or Boston Latin, which makes me think that they exercise some degree of selectivity about that. But my own high school is public and not uber-fantastic, so maybe not.) I also don't know how many people nominated are accepted. In any event, you should contact the Admissions Office to see if you can get yourself in. The e-mails about it came from Shirley Moran, Jennifer Brown and Rochelle Rangoonanan, so it would probably be best to ask for one of them. Hope this helps. And good luck, the program is really fun.

when i went i happened to sit at the table with the professor who organized it (hes a german professor) anyhoo i was asking him about why he started it, how they choose who comes, etc.... first of all the admissions people are teh ones who deal with acceptances. also, the prof pointed out that the majority of kids there this year were from private schools...this is NOT because they want more private school kids, but he made it sound like perhaps the college counseling offices at private schools were easier to get to nominate peopel and the generally worked out more... he also said that lots of parents know about this program and call and try to get their kids in, and that does not work. ever(?) aaaalso....something like 400 kids are nominated and only 60-70 get to go (and i'm not sure how they pick these 70 cause i certainly had lower grades and sats than the people there, but i'm thinking there might be some sort of rec involved) but yea if you wanna go i would have your college couselor call princeton right now and start working it out for next year....cause if your school isnt on the list of schooolsl that nomminate, my guess is you arent' going to be able to go. GOOD LUCK and it is really an awesome weekend if you get to go. except it might make you extra sad if you get deferred (cough like me cough)

I think I should relate my own experience with the program this year: I go to a large, nationally unknown, average public high school in Missouri - clearly not on the list of invited schools. I found out about the program a little more than a month before it happened this year, and I immediately asked my college counselor to write the University and see if they would accept another nomination. The admit office wrote back and said that they would accept a nomination from us, so my college counselor wrote a letter and a few weeks later I got an acceptance letter in the mail.

It may be different if you're on the coasts...most of the people there were either from the Northeast or California, so I imagine it would be more competitive there.

Hope this helps. P.H.S. was a ton of fun.

Oh wow, this all sounds great. I emailed somebody (not sure who, lol) at Princeton and they are sending my school the nomination information.

Is it based strictly off your nomination letter, or is there any kind of accompanying application?
