Princeton, is it only a dream?

Hi, I'm a Junior. I'm planning on applying to pretty selective schools. My dream is Princeton, but I know Princeton is the dream for a lot of students. I will keep myself grounded and expect the worst, but please let me know where you think I stand in terms of admission at Princeton or any of the selective schools. Also, can you please give any tips to improve what I have going, any tips for the summer?

Also, what are ways to get some national or local recognition. I do so much, but I fear none of this will really be conveyed to the admissions officers. It always seems like kids who get all these awards like National Science or Forensics, etc awards get in. Like I've done so much, but some of it has just been personal motivation, how will they ever really know?

I am a minority. (Indian) (I know it won’t make a difference since so many Asians apply.)

I will possibly be interning with the American Civil Liberties Union. I'm not a hundred percent sure as of right now, so please don't take it into consideration yet.

If you read this far, thank you so much. That is all I can say. =]

Princeton doesn't actually exist...it is a figment created by the heavens to let people have something to aim for. The people who attend and/or graduate from Princeton are also just imaginary.

But seriously, you have a fair chance, but with Ivy Leagues, it's impossible to say.

How do you have a 4.05 unweighted? Do you mean 4.00 or weighted?

A+ could be 4.33 at his school

i'm no expert but your work seems well balanced and themed, such as darfur in both your activism groups and artwork. i'm a big obama fan and am an interested in 'getting out the vote'....how do u plan to do so...?? thanks : )

Oooo Okay.

Haha. But, yeah, I agree with kingofqueens. You have a shot, of course. You seem great :)

yea, i'm quite an obama supporter also.
i'm actually volunteering with the democratic party local chapter where i live and the o-train. i've only gone once so far, but recently i went to an inner city neighborhood with some other volunteers and we just passed out registration forms, and showed people how they can sign up. and we also pointed out some of the main issues. its an educating process primarily.

im a girl, but yes 4.333 is an A+ at my school, and an A is 4.0, while an A- drops down to 3.666

You have a reasonable shot, but HYP are impossible to call no matter how qualified you are.

You never really have a chance at the Ivies. No one does, unless you've got some serious legacy and/or prestigious standing (i.e. President's S/D, American royalty)...

yea i have absolutely no legacy at a top school.
mom went to vanderbilt. and for some reason i have no interest at all to attend vanderbilt.
and well dad, IIT in India.

mallika7122, you do too many things. It causes me to wonder if there is any one thing that you do really well. Too, you need to realize that HPY isn't everything. If you are as bright as you advertize, then it doesn't matter where you attend or even if you attend.

well i do alot of things, i know. but i have focuses. i'm constantly doing things within my focus. i'm extremely passionate about art, and social activism particularly DARFUR and other human rights organizations. i just listed alot of what i have done towards those.

could you suggest how i can make it come off across as more succint, or interesting to the reader?

i mean unfortunately i'm not one of those kids who simply can say:
4 years varsity soccer
violin award finalist
national science foundation program in the summer

its just not me. i guess.

wow IIT. from what ive herad, that is AMAZING. i wish my dad was that cool.

haha, yea he likes to brag about it.
he's always like "have you heard that newsweek wrote about it being tougher to get into than MIT?"

OMG I AM TOTALLY on you about the whole "succinct" thing!!

I would look at everyone else's posts with their : varsity soccer, Science Olympiad, Quiz Bowl, Violin and think there was something wrong with me- I need to write out everything- explain, provide a bit of context. But I guess I'm not alone and that's what separates us humanitarians from the Science/Math CCer's.

This just clarified things so much better for me. Haha.

Nice stats. Good chance for Princeton as anyone. Better than mine for sure, and my application is going up against yours next year... ^^

thanks.
unfortunately these schools are just getting harder to get into.
i was reading somewhere that this year's class (2008) had around 21000 applicants at Princeton, whereas normally there are about 17-18000. That just means they have to reject another 3-4000 students, which is just wonderful. And that trend is supposed to continue until 2010. o baby boomers.....

You can try IIT though! My son, an Indian, got rejected at MIT & wait listed at Caltech but has just walked into IIT.Well it was easier to get IIT than MIT for him, haha!

IITs all about the entrace exam...and i think they might be a little easier on internationals since we have to pay soo much more than Indian students...
For me, exam based entrances aren't a wholesome admissions process...hence i wasnt to excited about Australian universities either.
You are a strong candidate...work hard and it WILL pay off. :D
