I thought that it would be a good idea to start such a thread.

Sorry if there is one already. I didn't find it.

^I was thinking the same thing.

Are most prefrosh going to outdoor action?

Thanks for starting this thread! :)

^ You’re welcome.
How was everyone’s preview experience? Had a great time there. Such a storybook campus.

I think that Outdoor Action is the more popular of the two activities, but since my son isn’t too fond of the idea of going a week without a shower, he is leaning toward Community Action. :)

OA was a great trip - I highly recommend it to all entering freshmen considering a pre-orientation program. OA was a great way for me to meet some fellow Princeton students before getting caught up in everything once the semester started. I know, the one week without a shower seems a bit gross, but simply being able to detach yourself from everything for a week and to enjoy nature around you is a great experience, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Plus, you’ll never appreciate a shower as much as you will when you return from the trip!

But seriously, OA was great - I would definitely check it out.

Great idea to start this thread. Not much info. from Princeton so far for us. I have been periodically checking the 2014 site for info.

My D is leaning toward CA.

Is anyone else looking forward to the Labor Day weekend drive up I-95? At least, I have booked hotel for CA/OA Move-In and Parent’s Weekend.

anyone booked air tickets/hotel/car yet?
I did. I know it’s too early but I could have saved hundreds had I booked tickets 2 week earlier.

I think this thread is a great idea!
If you do the drop off during the CA/OA Move-In, will you still come back during the beginning of Orientation (9/11-9/12)?

^that’s our plan. will tour DC area, visit family/friends in between.

Welcome everyone! I’m a mom of a 2009 graduate and a 2012 rising junior. Oh and also a '78 alum. I love the school and am happy to see you all here:) and will help answer questions where I can.

Thanks Alumother,

I am planning on dropping my son off for CA/OA with all his stuff. I was not planning on coming back for orientation drop off. Is there anything special I might be missing by doing it this way?

I would rather not have to drive down to NJ 2x.

Thanks Alumother.
I see you are from CA. How many times did your kids fly back during the first year? Princeton has several breaks, some of them only 4 days. It take 2 days for round trip to west coast.

The response that I got in a previous thread was that you do not return for the official Move-In day (9/11 & 9/12) if you drop off for CA/OA.

We made our hotel reservations but not our plane tickets yet. How long after Sept 11th do most parents usually hang around? At UPenn (where our D did summer session), they kicked the parents out right after move-in.

Here’s the orientation schedule:

^ If you open the “Orientation Week Calendar” (.pdf), it says…

Saturday September 11 All members of the Class of 2014 MUST be here. ** (*international students)
9:00 4:00 Dormitory check-in.
l0:00 1:30 Brunch for parents and students in the residential colleges.
2:00 3:30 Reception for parents in residential colleges.
4:00 5:30 Parent Orientation to Health Services.
** 5:30 Suggested departure time for parents; subsequent orientation events are intended
for students only.
**7:30 9:30 Opening meeting for all new students.

Haha. I guess I should read my own links more carefully. :)

My question is really this: do parents hang around for a day or two after orientation in case their kids need something? I say no, but we have a friend who is planning to hang around for awhile in Princeton for her son just in case. We’re in cali so once we leave, we are gone until the parents’ thing in October (BTW, very annoying that the parents’ thing is so soon after orientation…that’s four long trips on a plane in less than two months).

Is parents meeting really beneficial?
Too many long trips in such a short period.

I’m sorry I will not be there for any parent activities on move-in day as my daughter will be arriving about aug. 31 for the international student orientation which comes before OA. I will have already headed back to our country of residence (D is a dual citizen) before she even starts OA.

As for the shower thing, D wants to try and get in one of the base camp groups precisely for that reason. :P
