Princeton parent thread

Thanks, Peytoncline!

Stupid question.

Flying into Newark. Planning on taking the train/dinky into Princeton for orientation. Are train tickets for this something you have to get in advance? Or can you just buy them once you land and take the monorail to the station?

Any recommendations for a casual/fun dinner in town the night or two before orientation?

You can buy them at the airport. There are machines located near the airtrain loading stations (which take you between terminals) where you can buy a ticket to Princeton Junction. Then at the Junction, you buy your ticket for the Dinky, which is about $2 to $3 I believe. Although, if they close down the Dinky next year (which would be so unfortunate), I think you would have to take a bus to campus from the Junction.

As far as dinners are concerned, you’ll find a variety of restaurants along Nassau Street (Italian, Indian, Chinese, etc). Also, after dinner, you may want to stop by some of the ice cream shops - they are so delicious. Some of these are Thomas Sweets, The Bent Spoon, and Twist, to name a few.

You can buy tickets at the airport that go all the way to Princeton, and not just to Princeton Junction.

^Are you sure? I only ask because both times I went through Newark, I only saw the option for Princeton Junction, not Princeton Station on campus itself. Maybe I just missed it.

You can buy your tickets straight through-- just keep the tickets with you (they will punch the first half, and should give them back to you instead of taking them). Obviously you still have to transfer

Our favorite restaurant is Theresa’s, on Nassau Square. No reservations, so go early.

^That place is delicious!

When will the first tuition bill arrive?

^Sometime in August. I think my parents got my bill on August 20th or something like that last year.

Tigerdad

Based on a letter I received in May it appears as though you won’t be mailed a tuition bill. I think your child receives one electronically via his Princeton Account. I think the bill is available around August 1st with payment due around the 15th or so.

Can anyone else confirm this? I thought it a bit strange that my son would receive the bill and not me.

I meant e-bill. Do we get an email in addition to the e-bill in TigerPay? Just in case that I might forget to sign in to that account and check around that time.

Because of FERPA, the student is the one responsible for paying the bill. As best as I can tell, they sign up for a TigerPay account and then can invite their parent as a “payer” if they want the parent to be able to make payments too. If the student only has to invite the parent if he wants the parent to be able to make payments (which I’m guessing is most students).

See this link for more info.

Gsharp is right - the student has to invite the parent to open an account that allows access to the bill. (The student can invite anyone they want.)

Make sure your child knows s/he has to invite you. The initial e-mail goes to the student. Once you have an account you’ll receive e-mails telling you there’s a bill.

The first screen lists the most common destinations, but you can touch a button called “other destinations” or something to that effect to find Princeton.

^Haha, thanks for the info. Wow, I can’t believe I’ve gone through a year of school there and didn’t figure that out.

bump bump bump

I have a question that I am sure has been answered in another thread but wanted to ask again. Are you or have you already purchased a printer for your child to bring? If you are a current parent did your child need a printer? I know that the Princeton website says that printers aren’t really needed, but I was concerned if I should buy a cheap one for my son just in case. Also, are the school printers only black/white or do they have color ones too? The only reason I thought about getting him his own is if he has to do some sort of paper that needs color (graphs or pie charts). Any input will be appreciated. Thanks!!

I brought a printer with me, and as the year progressed, I realized that I really didn’t need one. There are laser printers all over school, so I ended up using those over my own. You really don’t need to bring a printer in my opinion, so save the space for something else.

I second the comments about the printer. My son bought/brought one, and found it was completely unnecessary. With space at a premium and plenty of other things to spend money on, take a pass on the printer!
