Princeton parent thread

ProudNJmom: Our D is in Blair. Two of her roomies are there already doing OA. We arrive on Friday.

I was looking back at an old question/answer. Someone said there are “wardrobes” in the quads. Is that a dresser? Sorry for my ignorance. Are there no closets in Blair? Just trying to get a handle on what to expect. Thanks!

Mrscollege: I will pm you with my S’s room info.

Mrscollege,
I PM-ed you.

Mrscollege,

My daughter just received an email from Princeton with an inventory of the contents of the room. That was quite helpful.

D didn’t stay in Blair, but did stay in a Quad Year One. The wardrobes provided in her first dorm were narrow closets .(They might have been portable). I also remember a large dresser in each shared bedroom. Really the student is pretty limited to hanging in the wardrobe the required jackets/coats for E.Coast, + (for females) a dress or two, for guys a dress outfit of some kind, and keeping everything else in drawers or portable storage (which most people also bring – bins, portable drawers, underbed storage, etc. Again I stress that the bedrooms in the quads are more like the size of a bedroom for one, not for two. Hope that helps. :)

So how is your freshman son or daughter doing?

My son rarely calls, but I guess that’s probably a good sign.

He reports via text that he loves most of his classes…the only exception being, surprise surprise…his freshman seminar. He says it is filled with people who love to hear themselves talk but have little to say. I am thinking it will get better as people get more comfortable in the setting. If not, well 3 out of 4 aint bad.:)

Hi all,
I was wondering the same thing. How is everybody’s S or D doing? Let me begin with mine.
D has seemed to settle in reasonably well. I haven’t heard any raves or rants. She calls home almost every day. In her own words, “I like it, but I’m still not feeling quite settled”. She has had to get used to the top bunk, and the fact that if she forgets something in her bunk, or on her desk, it is something of a production to retrieve it. I think that the experience will force her to be more organized…which is good! Academically, not much has happened yet, so we shall see.

I have heard from S quite frequently. I know that this past weekend he was kind of down, I think that he needs to make a few more friends. Monday’s phone call was much better, he had 3 classes that day and I think that now he will settle in better. I kept telling him that once classes start he will meet more people and make more friends. He said the homework is not too bad yet and even the reading seems pretty doable so far.

^Last weekend was probably a long one for most freshman. Most kids don’t have classes on Fridays and so they only had one day of classes before a three day weekend.

Now that things are gearing up they should be pretty busy.

Still, it might be helpful for your son to join a club or participate in an activity to get out and meet people outside the RCA group.

We suggested this to my son who said he wanted to wait until he saw how much work he had before he added anything else. But your son may be more open to the idea.

soomoo: Thanks. He has been hanging out/eating with some of his group. But like your S, he wants to see how much homework he will be getting before committing to a club. He has a few that interest him so it’s just a matter of him going to check them out. He’s a runner, but has been having a knee issue so once he can get back to running he said that he wants to join the running club which will be a good release for him.

My daughter seems to have no problems adjusting to Princeton. She’s been having great time, particularly last weekend when she was attending the lawn parties on Sunday. Classes are going well too. She does have Friday classes but they finish up around noon. She’s lucky in that she made a good friend on the web with similar interests.

It’s good to hear from everyone again… :-)

S rarely calls, only texts back swith short answers if I text him, why is texting better than calling???

Any of you S or D experienced internet connection problems in the dorm? Wired or wireless connection?

Once they are settled down, things will become more regular, I think there were just too much activities last week, and first full week of classes are overwelming, but so far so good!

Haha. Big internet issues today, Tigermom. D texted several times for advice. I tried to help, but it’s tough when you’re on opposite coasts.

The best thing is to tell your kid to go to OIT in Frist. They have people in there that can fix your computer. They are awesome.

Although I admit it was nice getting texts from her.

here’s a report on the wireless interenet problems:

[Outage hits University wireless network - The Daily Princetonian](http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/2010/09/23/26321/)

my son just plugged in his ethernet cable as the wired network seems to be working

Her ethernet wasn’t working either. I told her that she’d just have to figure it out on her own, and she did. Turned out she had a bad ethernet cable.

Just wanted to point out that if your student has an unlimited plan they can sign up @ 2 weeks before fall break to eat in the dining hall and there is NO extra charge. My d is a senior and will be on campus then and she will eat in Rocky dining hall. She stayed in the residential college all 4 years. One dining hall is designated for each break. I believe the intercession in january is Whitman and spring is Forbes.

Hello everyone!

How is everyone doing? Just want to bring this Parent Thread to the top again…

I have a question, actually 2: Does your S or D come home for Fall Break? If so, do kids usually leave campus on Friday or Saturday?

I imagine groups, groups of kids are heading for the Dinky station on Friday afternoon? It all depend on the midterm schedule I guess, would classes still be going on if amidterm exam is earlier in the week? I can’t find it anywhere on the website, except it says Midterm Week Oct 25-29, 2010.

Well, that made into 4-5 questions  I’m trying to book flights for S, price goes up so fast, thinking am already late in the game, don’t want to wait until this coming Parent Weekend to find out.

Thanks!

Congratulations to all of you for your sons and daughters getting to attend such a prestigious university.

I believe this year the kids leave October 29, or whenever their last midterm/due date is. Some kids stay on campus, certainly. To get to the airport, kids generally take the train. I’ve never had to get involved in the train part of things, the kids handle it there.

Alumother, isn’t Halloween a big deal at Princeton? Would there be any events or parties scheduled for those that stay on campus through Sunday? D will not be coming home to Europe but can spend time in NYC with her sister and other relatives but do you think it will be worth it for her to stick around for Halloween? Of course, I know she’ll find this out for herself as it approaches, but I’m curious.
