Princeton Review's 2009 Rankings of Party Schools

And #1 is (drumroll please...) PENN STATE!!! I'm so proud...it must be why she has a 3.8 GPA. Top Party Schools List: Princeton Review Puts Penn State First On Infamous List

Excellent - 2010 DD doesn’t have any of those on her list!!! Remind me not to share this list with her!!!

From a Press Release:
“These rankings are not more than popularity contests,” said university spokeswoman Annemarie Mountz. She noted that groups on the social networking site Facebook have urged members to make Penn State the top party school.

“It’s a badge of honor at this point. Nationwide, kids want to pump their schools in these surveys,” Mountz said. “It’s not connected to reality.”

The rankings were part of the Princeton Review’s “The Best 371 Colleges” annual guide. On average, there were 325 respondents to the survey per school, which Mountz said amounted to less than 1 percent of the University Park campus’ enrollment of 43,000 students.

I remember when my son and I were out on a road trip looking at colleges. We were at W&L when it was voted the top party school. Such a small school…LOL…how could they possibly get enough votes to win? The admissions officer said kids were talking about voting over 100 times. Nothing better to do???

Rankings, rankings rankings. Anyone can find a ranking to support anything. I think the Playboy rankings are more relevant for party schools.

Three LACs on the list! (Union, DePauw, Sewanee) Usually there’s only one LAC on the list.

UNION? I went to Union. I’d like to know how it ended up there. I mean, we had a good time but I also went to UF for grad school and that was a party school! Union didn’t hold a candle to UF!
That is incredibly surprising to me!

PSU, being such a big school, is very “diverse” in its range of partiers. I know kids, especially in the honors college, who are driven a whole lot more than many in elite private schools. The opportunities are there for a lot of work, a lot or parties, or whatever combination, and it’s up to the kid to decide where in this spectrum s/he falls.

I always get a kick out of this list. Unfortunately now those poor kids at UPenn have to contend with people thinking they go to the number 1 party school!

Yay for Union…just got a bump up on my list :)

R6L:

Why did I know you were going to post on this!!!

scualum- i guess you just know me too well
plus part of me really wants a party school

The saying at UW-Madison is “study hard and party hard”- they were off the top twenty but back on again. So much more to any school than that ranking, especially a large one. I have posted that at UW you have to study hard but you don’t have to party. Hopefully at other schools students also study as hard as they party.

all i can say is, partying and good grades can go hand in hand.

I’ve partied nearly every weekend since my freshmen year of HS(at local colleges with older friends, or just around where i live…) and done things that make parents cringe…

but i’m still top of my class, perfect GPA, and great ACT scores…

i don’t think the two are at all mutually exclusive

I’m still stuck on Union being on that list. What’s really ironic is they started pretty much dismantling the Greek system there in order to boost their reputation as a “serious” school - and now they make this list. It’s actually kind of funny…

Here’s a humorous take on this list:

[Penn State named 2010 Top Party School](<a href=“Examiner is back - Examiner.com”>Examiner is back - Examiner.com)

The usual FAQ shows the reason why these rankings should not be taken seriously as a reflection of reality. There is known ballot-box-stuffing at some colleges each year.

VOLUNTARY RESPONSE POLLS

One professor of statistics, who is a co-author of a highly regarded AP statistics textbook, has tried to popularize the phrase that “voluntary response data are worthless” to go along with the phrase “correlation does not imply causation.” Other statistics teachers are gradually picking up this phrase.

Uh oh. UF is slipping. I couldn’t help but notice that the SEC came in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the rankings.

Fall on the UF campus:

DS and I were talking about the major tailgating on the UF campus that goes on game-day Saturdays. Pre-game Fridays, employees at UF receive a notice under their windshield wipers to have their car out of the parking lot by 5:00 pm, or their car will be towed away to make room for the incoming tailgators. (So, who cares if you paid a couple of hundred bucks for a parking decal or have to work late?) Heaven forbid you want to do research on a game-day Saturday. Every square inch of the parking lots and lawns are taken up with tailgators revving up for the big game. Don’t even think about taking up valuable tailgating space with your intent to study. You see everything from a few lawn chairs to tents to massive RV’s parked across the campus. Partying begins EARLY (like the night before) and culminates early Sunday morning (provided UF wins the game, which, of course, we do.)

This fall tradition pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the year. After all, children often imitate their parents, and what an example their parents set. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a rabid Gator fan myself, but geez, how about showing a little restraint.

A few years ago some Tennessee fans were arrested for walking down the street by The Swamp with open containers (against the law around here), but were quickly released when they complained LOUDLY about the unfairness of it all. What are a few laws when the Gators are playing in The Swamp?!

Perhaps it’s the perpetual warm weather, but southern college football seems to entice all comers to the drinking table - a habit that continues throughout the year.

So University of Texas, which we all know is pretty much only open to the top 10% of HS classes, is always high on the party list, and the students who never study list. ???

The Penn students KNOW they go to the number 1 party school.

Comment on the CU Boulder Daily Camera website regarding this poll:

“There really should be playoffs”.

Go Buffs!
