Congratulations EDers and first members of '10!!!

Bet you're all pretty excited, I was in your shoes not so long ago. ;) I'm a current student at Pton, so if you've got any questions, ask away!

Is butler hall really that bad?

From what I've heard & seen, it's pretty much a mixed bag. The Ellipse (Bloomberg) is supposed to be amazing, and some of the rooms are quite sweet. The upside of the waffle ceilinged 'butt' is that you'll often get to have your own single. Most of the dorms at Princeton range from ok to amazing, so anything you get won't be that bad.

Just what is so wrong about a waffled ceiling has always been beyond me.

Butler's not a hall, it's a residential college composed of a number of different buildings. No, they're not that bad, if you like 120 square foot singles and don't mind having a brick wall that might be impossible to hang posters from. Looking back, I probably would have liked being in Butler.

The perceived ranking of residential college quality may or may not correlate with the quality of housing you actually receive freshman year. Even storied gothic Rocky College has its crappier rooms, I'm sure; I know Mathey did. Finally, your roommates determine how much you love or hate your living arrangment.

Gianievve...I have yet to meet you, and that's kind of weird considering we were both a part of the ED group. This should be remedied next semester :)

All I've seen of Butler is Lourie-Love - the architect obviously thought that bathrooms were perfectly acceptable substitutes for corridors. :p

If Butler buildings don't leak when it rains, they have something over Rocky/Mathey.

Hahhaha. Yeah, I found out this year that the Scully windows leak.

our windows leak!

oh and our shower doesn't drain :p

But facilities has been really helpful :)

How are the fitness facilities? I remember Ashley said something about the popularity of ellipticals, but beyond that?

admits.yale.edu

does princeton have a similar thing for admits?

the fitness facilities are pretty nice, they keep buying new machines. It's pretty crowded around 5, so you might have to wait to use some of the machines, but in general its pretty nice. Dillon gym, which houses the stephen's fitness center, is set to be renovated soon (i think?-- there was a whole study that came out maybe last year about what princeton should do to improve its facilities.) Dillon's pretty centrally located, which is useful

The facilities are generally pretty good up-to-date and well-maintained. I think there's a weight room, a room with all the exercise machines (treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, stairmasters) and there are several dance studios around campus, and a basketball court on the main floor of dillon. There are also several places you can play tennis, volleyball etc. If you're into fitness, they offer great classes from yoga to martial arts so there's basically something for everyone :)

http://www.princeton.edu/tigers09/ <<< was the website for last year's class, but Tigers 10 will be your closest friend in the weeks before you get to campus. The info on just about everything is right there, along with deadlines for your matriculation forms, information about housing, freshman seminars, student guides, buying your computer, orientation calendars and lots of other useful info.

Dillon could definitely use a renovation, and I hope it gets one really soon. The atmosphere is just...blah. Probably one of the reasons I only go there if I have rehearsal in one of the MPR/aerobics/dance rooms...

hi philntex :)

:) thanks, ec, gian, and phil!

Now for the most important question: What is the on-campus food like (selection, vegetarian options, fun dining hall traditions, etc.)?

they are currently trying to improve on-campus food, and in the two years that ive been here they have made a big difference. My freshman year i would hardly ever eat in the dining hall, this year I eat there a lot. There's a decent amount of selection (most days, not so much on the weekends), although it gets a bit old by the end of the year because they keep repeating the made to order stuff (firebowl, pasta bowl) About half of my friends are vegetarians, and thye usually have enough to eat, it depends on how picky you are. They've tried ot use more vegetarian and vegan things this year, as well as more organic and locally grown foods. It's not amazing food, but for dining hall food its decent.

twice a year they have dinner in which outside chefs come and cook and the food then is usually really good. Its different people every year, and they set up the dining hall all nice with tablecloths and stuff. They also serve thanksgiving dinner the thursday before thanksgiving, and every wednesday is chef's night which means that the food in each of the dining halls is different (which is how it was last year, or atleast wilson/butler had different food from rocky/mathey which had different food from forbes-- this year the same food is everywhere)

you can also use your meal plan to eat at frist, which has pizza, italian food, sandwhiches, salad, sushi, grill stuff, and mongolian bbq.

hope that helps
