Hey, I was just looking over the princeton supplement and saw that it had a section saying "Please tell us how you have spent the last two summers (or vacations between school years), including any jobs you have held." It then just has a blank space of about half a page. For this section, should I just write a brief description of my job, or should I make into more of a narrative-type essay? I think the latter could actually help me, show my personality a bit as to why I'm "just a camp counselor", but I'm not sure if that's what they're looking for.

A more narrative-type. But be aware that it doesn't ask you only about the jobs. It asks you about everything you have done in the last two summers.

affle, they're looking for a brief description of what you did over the past two summers. there's no need to follow an essay format. however, if that's what you plan to do, i don't think it can hurt

I disagree. That section, like the essay section, provides a rare opportunity for you to sell yourself. That is, to show why you're different and more desirable than the competition.

IMO, it should be used in a way which is responsive to the prompt, of course, but through which you disclose interesting, unique, and hook-like facts about yourself which otherwise would not be known to the committee.

It's the only truly open ended area in the application and should be used creatively. Avoid square pegs in round holes--smooth and sensible segues are the rule--but use this section to tell them things that you haven't been able to include in the application thus far and which are likely to make the reader say, "hey, this person pushes the envelope. No simple laundry list here. And the content adds a dimension I really like."

All IMO.

I wrote an informative few paragraphs, but explained and looked at certain things, like my volunteering at a hospital and going to a running camp, that really stuck out and weren't really explained elsewhere in the app.

On Common App, it says the Princeton supplement is not yet available...?

I talked about jobs and stuff but then wrote about poker night and chipotle burritos. Make it seem like you are a person.

Thanks for all the responses!

Ugh. Why is the summer question so long? Stanford asks the same question in 300 characters. I don't really want 2500 to explain all the fun I have with my friends...

Otherwise, Princeton's supplement kills Stanford's, which is similar, but more annoying!

I had trouble picking my favorite movie quote, but mostly my favorite recording!!! What to pick? Talking Heads? Bob Dylan? Bowie? Miles Davis? Beatles? Something more obscure that I love but adcoms have never heard of???

I checked to see if any good bands that I love had played at Princeton, and all I found was Lifehouse and Maroon 5. Yuck.

can someone please link me to the supplement becuase I keep on getting 'not available" :(

thanks!

princeton's application is just as annoying because they don't give enough space for the movie quote. A memorable line in like 150 characters? please.

(The link on the Common Application site is dead; this link comes from the Princeton site and is correct for this year's Common Application Princeton Supplement.)

I wouldn't worry too much about what they want for this section. I didn't even realise that they wanted a long answer until after I'd submitted my app, and basically wrote a brief list of my activities. I of course panicked about how this had doomed me and my application for the next four months.

But you know what? I still got into Princeton. So although I wouldn't do what I did, I wouldn't worry about what they expect you to do. If you've got a shot at Princeton, how you do this section isn't going to change that, and if you think a narrative-type essay would be a plus in your app, I'd go for it. :)

For this section of the application, can we further flesh out the things mentioned on the common app or is it something completely unmentioned?
