Princeton University Class of 2020 SCEA Results

Since decisions for QuestBridge will be coming out soon, here is a thread for Princeton SCEA 2020 results! Please only post results using the given format so that this thread can serve as a valuable resource for future applicants. For other SCEA discussions, please use this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/princeton-university/1787898-official-princeton-scea-class-of-2020-applicant-thread.html

Good luck to all of you guys! You’ve worked so hard to get all the way here; know that, regardless of the decision, you’ll be successful no matter where you go! If you get accepted, congratulations! If you get deferred or rejected, know that this decision has nothing to do with your self-worth. Find comfort in the fact that Princeton’s admissions process is subjective, and that you’re not alone; many bright, young kids are turned away at this institution every year. Think positively! Perhaps the closing of this one door may lead to the opening of many other doors in the future, doors that you would’ve never known had existed had it not been for this decision.

All right then, let’s go! The rule for using this format is simple:
Remove the spaces after each initial bracket.
For example, change [i* text] to [i* text] before posting. You guys are applicants to Princeton though, so I don’t think you really need these directions… :stuck_out_tongue:

If you aren’t sure of the format, click “preview” before you submit. The decision should be in color, and there should be bullet points for each of the qualifications given.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
[] SAT I (breakdown): 720 Math, 730 Reading, 760 Writing (took once - don’t believe in giving the College Board my money)
[
] SAT II: 720 French reading, 800 US History
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[
] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): My school doesn’t rank and I’ve never asked for mine

[
] IB (place score in parenthesis): Not offered
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Lit, AP Physics C (the mechanics part), AP French, AP Stat, AP Comparative Govt, Orchestra
[
] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.): National Merit Commended, National Hispanic Scholar, AP Scholar w/ Honors, NHS and French Honor Society (a few smaller ones, I listed them in additional info on Common App)
Subjective:
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Ballet training at a local studio (I’ve been in the company for 7 years, ranked as a soloist/principal for about 5), violin (play in orchestra at school and with our auditioned group but I kind of suck), handbell choir at church, youth group
[
] Job/Work Experience: Preballet teaching assistant for 4 years
[] Volunteer/Community service: I get a lot of time for this through dancing - we’re a small school so we get to do a lot at community events. Also: tutoring at middle school, Vacation Bible School leader, Key Club through school
[
] Summer Activities: Not much, but the summer after junior year I spent a month studying in France
[] Essays: Common App (8/10 - not the best, but portrayed me well), Princeton Supplement (9/10 - I was pretty happy with the long one and my extracurricular one)
[
] Teacher Recommendations: I didn’t read them, but they were probably good - both from teachers who know me well, and that’s what matters most!
[] Counselor Rec: My school is big and I avoid guidance - so no idea
[
] Interview: It was kind of weird, but I don’t think it was too bad. He was super nice. I asked questions and I think he liked answering them!
Other
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes, but they have a really great financial aid program so really don’t worry about this when you apply.
[
] Intended Major: Listed History, but might do French. I have time! Plan is to be a teacher
[] State (if domestic applicant): Pennsylvania
[
] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Public

] Gender: F
[] Income Bracket: ~150,000
[
] Hooks/tips (URM, athlete, legacy, 1st gen, etc.): URM and sort of first generation (neither parent graduated from college but others in my family have)
I also submitted a dance supplement with a variation of me and something I had choreographed a few years back.

Reflection
[] Strengths: Grades and I think I probably just seemed honest… I don’t believe in doing things that “look good,” I just do things I care about, and I think that shows.
[
] Weaknesses: Because of above belief, extracurriculars!
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: NO IDEA… I’m shocked!!!
[
] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to Gordon College so far.
[li] Where else are you applying for RD: Fordham U (NY), Tufts U (MA), and U of Rochester (NY)[/li]
General Comments: For future applicants who read this: don’t let these things freak you out. Everybody I’ve ever read about on this site has made me doubt myself. Don’t doubt yourself! If you work hard and are dedicated to things that truly interest you, they’ll be able to tell. I’m so happy and surprised!!!

PS - Sorry I messed up the formatting

Decision: Deferred

Objective:

[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): Did not submit.
[
] ACT: 36 (36 R 35 E 35 M 36 S | 26 W)
[] SAT II: Math II, 790
[
] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 5/423
[
] AP (place score in parenthesis): World History (5), Statistics (5), Lang (5), US Gov (5), Environmental (5), Calc AB (5) US History (4), Literature (4)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): Psych SL (6)
[
] Senior Year Course Load: IB Math HL, English HL, History of the Americas HL, Physics SL, Spanish SL, Theory of Knowledge, and AP Human Geography, Microeconomics, and Macroeconomics.
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.): Scholastic Art&Writing Gold Medal, National Poets Program semi-finalist, AP National Scholar, National Merit Commended. [/li][/ul]

Subjective:

  • [] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Writing, varsity swimming, summer league swimming (junior coach), club swimming, tutoring program (founder), violinist as part of quartet for weddings and as part of second violin section in youth orchestra.
    [
    ] Job/Work Experience: Didn’t put.
[] Volunteer/Community service: My tutoring program.
    [
] Summer Activities: Writing, swimming, violin. My usual stuffz.
  • Essays: Common App (7/10) I wrote about how my shortness affects my swimming, and I tried to crack some jokes, but I think my essay was kind of a logical mess; Princeton Supplement (7/10) I wrote about my sweaty hands, and again I tried to crack some jokes but the composition was just messy af.
I also sent in an arts supplement for poetry. Guess they didn’t like it, lol.

[] Teacher Recommendations: I got them from my 11th grade English teacher and my 11th-12th grade physics teacher. I really don’t know how they were, since they might have written my letter in flowery language, but I talk very little in class but do well on projects/essays. Also, my English teacher seemed very bent on writing down my extracurriculars and accomplishments (when I asked for a rec, he asked a lot about them) rather than my interests.
    [
] Counselor Rec: No idea. My counselor does require that we answer some questions and fill out a resumé, and I’ve talked to her from time to time (she seems to like my jokes? lol).
[] Additional Rec: N/A. Though I might consider sending a rec from my violin teacher, who knows more about me than my actual academic teachers (lol).
    [
] Interview: 7/10. The guy was very friendly, and there were no awkward moments because he was prone to talking a lot, and he called me a “Renaissance woman.” I might have come off as very quiet and reserved though.

Other

[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[
] Intended Major: Comparative Literature
[] State (if domestic applicant): FL
[
] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public, not so competitive in general but a lil’ competitive within the IB
[
] Ethnicity (Hispanic Y/N/not reported):
[] Race(s) (AI/AN, Asian, AA, NH/PI, White, not reported): Asian af, I’m Filipino.
[
] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: >100K
[
] Hooks/tips (URM, athlete, legacy, 1st gen, etc.): I am such an anti-hook. Like if a hook was a mountain I would be a black hole. I’m done talking lol.
[ /list]

Reflection
[] Strengths: My awards? Test scores, course rigor, commitment to extracurriculars (swimming, man…)
[
] Weaknesses: Teacher recs, lack of leadership in ECs, maybe my essays (they were probably a hit or miss tbh).
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Probably because I’m not an inquisitive go-getter in the public eye, my teacher recs were probz hella generic, and that probably said a lot to the admissions officers.
[
] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Pitt Honors program so far. Waiting on University of Florida and Florida State University for other early decisions.
[li] Where else are you applying for RD: lawwwwdddd a lot of schools. Vassar College, Wellesley College, Pomona College, Rice University, Stanford University (my mom won’t talk to me if I don’t apply, a.k.a. I’m ded), Columbia University (fee waiver af), University of Chicago, and probz University of Pennsylvania for the Kelly Writer’s House. [/li][/ul]

General Comments: For future reference, I did get a financial aid e-mail around Dec 3, did not get a financial aid confirmation, and am unsure whether Pton asked my guidance counselor for first quarter grades.

Also: a ton of people at my school, all equally deserving of a spot, were deferred from their early schools. I know one guy who is probably the brightest guy I’ve ever met (he always contributes to class discussion in significant ways, he’s hella funny, he has great test scores, and he’s a URM) who was deferred by his early decision school. Similarly, I’ve gotten to know a lot of brilliant and incredible people from the 2020 SCEA discussion thread who’ve been deferred. So, as it’s been said again and again and again, even by my interviewer, admissions really is a crapshoot. I’ve noticed that people deferred from SCEA tend to 1) get into Pton RD, against seemingly massive odds 2) get into another great school in the end, or 3) end up somewhere they’re having the time of their lives at. And of course, as a final note, a college can never define your value as a person. You will do great things, no matter where you go.

Decision: Deferred

General Comments:

It’s college admissions. In the end, it doesn’t matter. Just believe in yourself and trust that you’ll end up going somewhere you love, because that’s what really counts. If you want advice, I would say 1) Have solid academics, and know your academic ability/potential, 2) Be a good person…this is where you can shine with the essays and recs, and 3) Commit to EC’s you LOVE and are passionate about, because that’s what’s gonna get you in. Congratulations to everyone who was admitted, and if you weren’t, have hope because when one door closes another opens!
