Princeton vs. UPenn vs. Wellesley

Hi!

I am an international future undergrad and I recently got admitted to Princeton, Wellesley and UPenn. My boyfriend is an MIT PhD student, so location-wise Wellesley is my top choice. Besides, I visited the campus and I immediately fell in love with this beautiful place and I met very nice people there.

However, I am planning to go back to Europe after I graduate and I am not sure if a Wellesley degree would be as useful as a Princeton or UPenn degree.

Following my heart, I am sure I would go to Wellesley, but I don't know if it would be the best choice career-wise.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Prestige wise, Princeton is probably #1. You can’t go wrong with any, I believe Upenn is pretty large so if you are craving small set up, that may not be your fit.

Also depends on what your undergrad field of study is. One thing though - don’t make your choice based on where your boyfriend goes to college.

In this situation I’d be very hard-pressed to turn down Princeton. Boyfriends are just boyfriends. 4 years of college are pretty dang important.

Thanks for your help!

In fact, he is my husband, not just a boyfriend… Thus, he is not an issue to be ignored.

Oh. In that case, Princeton is still the best school, but the question is completely different. Can your marriage sustain 4 years with a commute like that? Does your husband have lab work that means he can’t come stay with you in Princeton?

Go to Princeton. So you and your husband from MIT can later copulate to produce the kid that will cure this world of Cancer.

Hmm…married at 18 already? Not judging but guess you are free to make your decision…I’d go with Princeton…as someone said…it is 4 years…you have a lifetime of married life…;)

That’s hawt.

Definitely a Princeton degree…

Thanks for your imputs! I very much appreciate it!

You have a difficult decision to make and may have to compromise somewhere. Suggestions on the universities have to be general since you did not state your intended major or EC interests.

Wellesley is an outstanding liberal arts college. Many top professional women, including Hillary Clinton and Madeleine Albright are graduates of Wellesley. Wellesley has cross registration with MIT meaning you may be able to take an MIT course. However, transportation difficulties limit students ability to actually take courses at MIT. Wellesley was founded to educate women since the Ivy League universities did not admit women. Today, many women that would have previously attended Wellesley are now choosing to attend HYP. Since Wellesley is not a research university it will not have the same name recognition in Europe as Princeton.

UPenn has one of the best undergraduate business departments and is also strong in the humanities. UP is better known in this country than abroad. Just as I have difficulty naming the best Italian, Swiss, and Spanish universities most Europeans know only a few American universities such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, and Stanford. Even many Americans confuse UP with Penn State. It would require approximately 5 hours to drive to Cambridge or $200 to $250 to fly from Philadelphia to Boston.

Princeton is dedicated to undergraduate education. Depending on your major you may be able to arrange your classes so that you have Friday free to travel. It would require about 4.5 hours to drive to Cambridge; however, Princeton discourages freshman and sophomores from having a car on campus. There is a train station on the edge of campus. You could take a train to NYC and transfer for a train to Boston. Not a simple trip but you could read a book on the train. In general, it is more difficult to transfer to an Ivy League university than to be admitted in the regular decision cycle; unless you are a world class athlete you should not expect to be able to transfer out of Princeton to attend Yale or Harvard.

I hope that this helps.
