Hey everyone! I am a senior who was recently admitted to Princeton and am [tentatively] awaiting admission to Wharton. The thing is that having visited Penn and Princeton, I know that I am in love with Princeton. I love everything about it. I like Penn a lot as well (it used to be my dream school), but Princeton just clicked with me. However, my parents are forcing me to apply to Wharton claiming that its job opportunities are better for those who want to go into consulting and finance.

I was wondering if any of you could give me insight as to whether Princeton would still set me up for the same success as Wharton would (I'm planning on majoring in Economics with Certificates in Woody Woo and Finance) or whether I'd be missing out on choosing Princeton over Wharton. If I can become confident that there is nothing I'd be losing out on by going to Princeton, I'll just not apply to Wharton and commit to Princeton soon.

You’ll have plenty of opportunities to break into Consulting and Finance from both schools but there is no doubt that Wharton is the top feeder school to the most elite jobs (Bridgewater, Silver Lake, Blackstone, KKR, etc.) like buyside positions right out of undergrad. Almost every financial organization on the planet recruits at Penn, the same cannot be said of Princeton to some extent.

You will absolutely have the opportunity to get into banking/consulting/business if you do well at Princeton. I went to Wharton and loved it, but Penn had a different vibe as compared to Princeton – they are both great schools but it is easy to understand how different people can prefer different schools. I’d say if you love Princeton then commit to the school, buy your hoodie, and enjoy the rest of your senior year. Congratulations!

Thank you Happy1 and Goldenboy! As to what Goldenboy is saying though, does that mean that firms like Bridgewater, Silver Lake, and Blackstone don’t recruit at Princeton at all or that they don’t recruit as heavily at Princeton? Does Princeton feed well into private equity firms?

Princeton undergraduates see some PE recruitment but its not as extensive as Harvard and Wharton where Bain Capital, Silver Lake, KKR, AQR, etc. all take a few analysts at least each year.

Congrats on Princeton! Obviously there is no bad choice here. I agree with happy1. You will not “lose” anything by choosing Princeton, IMHO, and will have fabulous opportunities in finance, consulting, etc. if you pursue them and do well in school.
