Hey. I know it's a little early to be talking about the application process, but I saw on a thread that a student used a teacher instead of the principal/counselor for the principal/counselor rec's. Is that allowed? It would benefit me because the principal and counselors aren't involved much at my school...

Well I think you have to get your transcripts from your principal/counselor and I don’t know if you could get those from your teachers.

But aren’t those in a separate form. For the recommendations you’re supposed to hand them to the principal/counselor.

Hmmm I guess not then… the schools i’m applying to have them in the same form.

my school doesn’t have a guidance counselor, and it’s too big for the principal to know every student personally. do you think i could pass the form to a dean instead?

In my experience, it just has to be someone that’s not your teachers but is affiliated with the school (sort of). For example, I was in a very small school (20 students per grade), so my guidance counselor and principal could fill it out. If you have neither guidance counselor nor a relationship with your principal, I think that asking a class dean or something would be appropriate.

Just to be clear to everyone, there are mainly 3 recommendation forms that schools give you: English teacher recs, Math teacher recs, and principal/guidance counselor recs. Sometimes, the schools don’t include the guidance counselor recommendation. In other cases, like Middlesex, they include a Social Studies recommendation form. That can be passed to a Social Studies/History/equivalent teacher. If you were like me, where that class is joined all up, you can give it to the science teacher.

Hey. As my interviews approach I’m thinking about when to give my teacher recommendation forms. I’m going to do the staple, but I really want to do a history and science rec. The school’s I’m applying to don’t have forms for that subject so should I print off a form from another School’s website (say middlesex even though I’m not applying)?

Oh no! I have a problem here. What if have neither a counselor nor a relationship with my principal and my class dean is also my maths teacher?

My son had an English teacher who was also his counselor. He did one English rec. and one counselor rec. My son also had a math teacher who was also his coach. He filled out the coach rec and math rec.
