Has anyone here taken Principles of Economics? How much Calculus is involved?

none.

knowing what a derivative is and how to get them can create some shortcuts when calculating things like marginal cost or whatever but they also give formulas for it that involve no calc

edit: you didnt ask it but i wanted to say that when u are trying to sign up, dont worry too much about which prof you get. unless you get a great number, you wont get gulati (he doesnt accept anyone who tries to sit in on the class). i've heard good things about desei (sp?) since a few friends took her. i had musatti who i loved. so dont worry too much about the section you get

I had Desai, she wasn't a very good lecturer and was a real pain in office hours. Heard good things about Susan Elmes if you have her, and of course Gulati has an enormous fan club.

I have the AP credit, and I'm thinking of skipping out of Principles of Economics for an intermediate Micro or Macro.

Does this sound wise to the experienced Columbians of CC?

you have a 5/4 combination on ap micro/macro? if so, i'd say go for it. i know people who did it and they did fine in intermediate

gulati is amazing! his class is pretty hard though but his lectures are a joy to listen to. I knew nothing about econ going in and he really knew how to get it through to me...granted i did pretty badly on the midterm but stepped it up on the final....for an intro class its challanging but he makes it worthwhile. He's entertaining...its simple as that.

edit: oh, i forgot the actual reason that i posted.....gulati technically lets people sit in on his class....he wont kick you out because of course he wont recognize you in the 200-300 faces but the year i took we did macro first in his class while the other class did micro first (or vice versa...dont remember).....that's how he kept people from sitting in on his class.

^oh you can sit in on the class, no prob. but he will not sign an add/drop form to actually sign you up for it

the year i took it i think he actually kicked freshmen out of the class in place of upperclassmen.....dont hold me to that statement though....i vaguely remember this from 2.5 years ago.
