Has anyone ever enrolled in this class at Harvard? If so, how was your experience with Economics S-10ab : Principles of Economics? Iquiring minds want to know.

I didn't mind it, but it didn't really blow me away. I've taken much more interesting classes here. This could, however, just be my bias towards science classes.

If you want to know about the structure of the course- it's taught with about eight lectures to the entire 900+ class, a few by Professor Mankiw and a few by guest lecturers. I liked Mankiw's lectures, and a few of the other professors were very interesting, but a couple were dull.

The vast majority of the class is taught in sections three times a week by teaching fellows. My teaching fellow was good (most are at least passable), but it wasn't enough to get me particularly interested in the material.

There were six problem sets, each taking about 2-4 hours to complete, and two midterms.

There's also a series of five hour long unit tests, given several nights each couple of weeks, that are completely optional but are given for extra credit (a point on the final exam each) pass/fail. (There are VERY easy to pass and really just check that you're following most of the material. And even if you fail, you're allowed to take a different test the next day).

In short- it's a not particularly difficult class that you'll definitely want to take if you're even considering a concentration in economics (and from what I've heard from my friends who are economics concentrators, the courses get'd much more interesting at higher levels, and the concentration overall is well taught). However, I wouldn't get too excited about it. If you're interested in more math-based economics (Ec 10 uses only algebra), you should consider Ec 1010a, which teaches similar material at a more abstract (and, from what I've heard, more interesting) level.

I was checking out the Harvard Economics website. For the Harvard Summer School, Dr. James Medoff was teaching the combined Economics S-10ab : Principles of Economics last year.

How tough are Dr. Medoff's Economics classes? I am thinking about registering for his Economics class in the near future at the Harvard Summer School. Any personal information about the professor would be very helpful. Thanks!!!

Oh, I thought you meant Ec 10 at the college, taught by Mankiw. My apologies.
