There were only three threads concerning printers, and none of them really answered the questions I have so hopefully you guys will be somewhat helpful.

1.) I will be living in Sunset Village. Are there any place/labs that's close to SV where I can print things out? How far is the closest place?

2.) Do you recommend me bringing my own printer?

Pro: CONVENIENCE (Do not have to make any trips to computer lab everytime I need to print something)
Con: PRICE (Have to spend money everytime the ink and papers run out)

3.) What's your opinion on sharing printer with the roommates (I have two roommates)?

Pro: Can divide up the cost with roommies when buying papers/cartridge.
Con: Pure Annoyance and Faster running out of materials

4.) Color Printers vs Black-White Printers - Which would you recommend?

5.) Do you think there will be enough space to place the printers in a three-people room when all three of us bring our own printers?

1) you can print in covel computer lab. (i think its $0.05/page)

2) yes, i’d say bring your own

3) no, it gets complicated trying to split the cost of supplies because one might print more than the others, and thats hard to keep track of to figure out who should pitch in more etc etc.

4) you can most likely get by with just a B&W (ie: laser). but color just adds that extra flexibility should you ever want/need color prints. there are color laser printers in covel and other labs if you just get a B&W (i think its $0.25/color page). color inkjets are also much cheaper, but lasers offer quicker and crisper prints. its up to you.

5) yes, printers are pretty small. even AIO printers are pretty compact now. just dont bring like a giant business sized multifunction copy machine or something.

1) I believe you can print at the place where they help fix any networking problems (forgot what the place is called…). It’s right next to the Hilltop store/stairs that lead to Rieber, which is pretty close. You can also print at the Rieber Labs, which is just a walk up the stairs. ^VTE says Covel - so go to covel.

I had my own printer so didn’t use any public printing services.

2) Yes. It’s really cheap to buy paper in the first place.. As for ink, you can buy your own ink and manually inject it into your cartridges (ink refill sets). That’s what I do, and it costs like 19 dollars for 3 refills (comes with a syringe and any additional materials). More information can be found here: http://www.4inkjets.com/

3) Not a great idea - I usually print my papers/labs late at night because I finish them pretty late. My roommate keeps the printer under his bed, so I don’t want to be crawling under his bed at 2AM when he’s sleeping to get my papers. Definitely more convenient to have your own printer.

1) Covel and STC (Or “Covel Business Center”)

2) Definitely.

3) Definitely no sharing.

4) Color.

5) Plenty. Can fit on/under your desk.

Yes, everyone gets $5 on their ORL accounts. They also give out $5 credits at most RLCC events (workshops on how to use excel, upgrade PC, etc.) for attending.

For the summer, printing was free in Rieber Hall computer lab. Is it also free there in the regular year?
Also, just wondering, can anyone get into Rieber Hall/other housings after 9 pm by swiping their Bruincard? Or must you be a resident in the building?

You can swipe through any Residential Hall (Rieber, Hedrick, and before, Sproul) at any time. To go upstairs after 9pm, any BruinCard will work as well.
