Printer

I just got a macbook for college but no printer yet... I tried an HP 1018 but it's not compatible. I did some research but that just confused me more and also included more types than I need. Can anyone suggest a good, compatible, reliable, not to expensive (preferable under $100) black and white laser printer for me. Preferable not Epson because if there was one thing I learned from my research, most people seems to be quite dissatisfied with Epson

I have an Epson (got it for 50 bucks at a Best Buy sale) and it has never failed me in the three years I’ve had it. It scans/prints/copies too.

ETA: I do recommend against Canon. Not because it’s bad, but because its ink is soooo expensive. I ran through two full sets of ink cartridges in my first year, and if I had a Canon I would have probably paid twice the price of Epson ink.

didn’t u get a free printer and ipod with ur macbook? anyway, do u guys really recommend a printer for the dorm room? is it really necessary? i heard all the units have a office where u can print (?)

Same question as DomCobb especially since I read all dorms have printers.

I don’t know if all dorms have printers, but I do know that Unit 1 has printers in the academic center downstairs of the courtyard. You get some amount of free printing per day and access to computers ([Residential Computing at UC Berkeley](http://www.rescomp.berkeley.edu/about/products/)).

You can also get free printing (250 pages per semester) on campus at the OCF in the basement of Eshleman Hall (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/</a>). You can also buy printing pages at Moffit (a $12 minimum will be charged to your CARS account, but it’s 10 cents per black and white page).

As far as laser printers go, I have a Brother printer and it works well (except for the wifi, but I don’t really care about that): [Wireless Laser Printer | Brother HL-2170W](http://www.brother-usa.com/Printer/ModelDetail.aspx?ProductID=hl2170W).

I’d recommend a printer if you need to print things like essays, lab reports, etc. It’s convenient and the academic center isn’t always open

Buy a laser printer. Nothing worse than having an injet run dry when you’re trying to print a paper 10 minutes before class.

I think Brother makes some decent ones for around $100. Mine was $150 with wireless accessibility.

There should be at least one printer in your dorm room. I know some roommates shared one. I think there’s nothing more annoying/scary than realizing you need to print something out before you head off to class, and realizing that the ASC or print center doesn’t open for another hour or it’s closed for lunch or whatever. I’ve had people knock on my dorm door many times, pleading to use my or my roommate’s printer because they made a mistake on their essay and need to print out another copy before their class (and the ASC isn’t open or they didn’t have enough money on their Cal1 Card).

Do I need a color printer or is black & white okay?
