For current students, or perhaps incoming students: Is buying a printer worth it? I already plan to spend a great deal for my laptop. Would it be a waste of time to buy a printer, or will I regret not doing so later?

Thank you!

I brought a cheap (<$100) laser printer, and I really loved it. One toner cartridge (~$30-$40 if you buy a 3rd party one) would last an entire year, and it was really nice not to have to run to the lab/etc to pick up a draft of a paper late at night.

That said, most students don’t have printers + get by just fine. I think the only mistake you can make is buying an inkjet - they’re giant money sinks.

If I recall, D got a “free” printer with the purchase of her MAC (pay $99 and get a $100 rebate). She got a multi function printer/scanner/copier unit. Her boyfriend had none (he is getting one for his sophomore year). I think she might have done fine without the printer and BF had no problems without one BUT I do know that D commented that the scanner function saved the lives of more of her friends during the year. They would scan what they needed on her unit and then e-mail it to themselves. And I know when D had mono, she scan/copied handwritten lecture notes from classmates. So, just another aspect of what a “printer” might be able to do for you.
