Looking at the super-small size of the desks in the dorms, there is hardly any space for a laptop and books, let alone a printer. My sister (also in college) also told me that buying papers for personal printers are costly. So is it worth it to find space and have a printer with me in my dorm, or should I just go to the library/computer lab instead to print out papers?

I think you will want a printer in your room. There is enough room in most dorm rooms to put in an extra shelf somewhere, you could put a printer on the top of your dresser. Maybe your roommate will have one though - you probably don’t need two in the room.

I have a printer… but I never use it. I don’t want to buy paper for it. Depending on your major, you may get to print for free at some of the labs, which is what I do.

Well I’m in biomed engineering, so I doubt I would be printing much. That completely slipped my mind haha. I guess I’ll try the first semester without a printer and go from there. If I do bring one, I can just put it on the floor or on a dresser as MidwestMom suggested.

Thanks for the help!

My sister lives in a UT Residence Hall and she keeps her printer (and scanner; 2-in-1) on the ground beside her desk! I’m pretty sure she finds it convenient. Usually when you purchase a new computer, there’s some sort of package that gives you a discount off of a printer, so perhaps find one of those D:

My daughter’s roommate got a free printer with the laptop she bought for college; that is the printer they are using in the room. (D has been keeping it well supplied with ink and paper.)

Can business majors print for free in certain labs?

For LAH kids who don’t know this: LAH kids can print for free in the LAH office’s little computer room/copy room between the main office and the conference room. (This can come in handy if you happen to be on that part of the campus and need to print out a revised paper to hand in.)

Otherwise it is 13 cents a page to print in any of the libraries.

If you are in a college in which you will need to write a lot of papers, you’ll probably want a printer in your dorm room for convenience. Printers are so cheap now, too. $29 for a printer/scanner/copier from WalMart.

I have a printer, and will soon need to refill my 2nd ink cartridge.I haven’t yet run out of paper, but I bought 2 reams before the school year started. It’s pretty convenient, but isn’t absolutely necessary. I wouldn’t recommend more than 1 per room, because you can easily share with a roommate.

Many majors have free labs for their students to print small jobs in. Otherwise, I know you can print in most labs on campus for $0.12 per page.

There are 5 computer labs in the residence halls. Carothers, Jester, San Jacinto, Kinsolving and Simkins. All have printers that you can print from and charge it to your Bevo Bucks.
