I'm planning on getting a Mac laptop, but how would I go about printing stuff? Like would I have to buy my own printer and bring it to campus, or do you just hook a cable up to the school's printers? And if that's the case, would having a Mac instead of a PC cause problems?

You can either e-mail things to yourself, upload them online at www.mfile.umich.edu, or figure out how to access your university AFS space (the school's file storage system) from your desktop, and then go print from a computer lab on a school computer. You get 200 pages of black and white printing a semester, and I think it's only 5 cents a page beyond that, so lots of people don't bother with a printer. Especially in places like South Quad that have a computer lab open 24/7 in the same building.

i wouldn't recommend a printer

takes up too much space

many assignments require them to be laser printed

it's much easier to print from rescomp

if ur printing pdf, just use mprint.umich.edu. rescomp is only 30 seconds away from ur room

I second cherrybarry, a printer is unneccesary. If you're an engineering student, you can also use unlimited CAEN printing (mostly found on North Campus).

Also, it's 400 pages/semester, not 200.

What courses require laser printers? Since most inkjet printers have a laser quality mode, how can they tell the difference? I was planning on bringing a small footprint 4 in 1 inkjet (print, copy, scan and fax).

If you have 1 and really would like to have one in your room, then go ahead...but it really isn't necessary to have 1 in your dorn and its definitely not worth going out and buying one for your personal use either...there are plenty of printers on campus, just use those

they want laser because 1. it looks nice, and 2. protects against water, humidity...esp when they have 100 pages stacked together, etc.

not all teachers require this, but some do. A printer really isn't necessary and unless u have another desk, it takes up a lot of space. plus, with ur laptop, ur basically left with no desk space to do work. i wouldn't recommend it but whatever floats ur boat
