printers

are printer necessary in college? my dad seems to think you can email assignments and just use the printers in the computer labs. i think that the scanner and copier will come in useful, and i'll need to hand in hard copies of papers..any opinions?

Yep, I agree with you - though I am not speaking from experience. But from everything I've read and heard, hard copies are needed.

I wouldn't use computer labs because it's inconveniet, may be expensive, and time consuming. It's not worth the time to get down stairs, walk a bit to the labs, find a station, transfer your data from disc, USB, or internet, maybe pay a fee, and go back to your dorm for just several sheets of paper when you can do that in a minute in your room instead of the 10-20 minute trip.

I'll be bring a printer to college for sheer convenience. That way I can get it printed without saving it onto a USB jump drive and getting it printed, hoping it's still open. Also, your roommate is bring a printer, ask him/her if you can work something out where you can use his/her printer (and help in paying for ink costs, or whatever).

It's not a must, it's just a convenience.

And yes, you may have to turn in hard copies.

If you're thinking about a scanner and copier as well, get a 3-in one for decent prices (usually about $99 for the lowest one, but I got a HP PSC 1610 for $79.99, original price being $129.99, because I bought a laptop. And yes, it's for the convenience again.

thanks for the responses...that was how i was thinking, too, just needed more reasons to convince my dad i needed the printer

i bought the hp 1610 as well for about 115...i didn't get any deals like you did, just a free $15 gift card with the pruchase

Make sure you buy more ink than you think you will need....you'll never know when you run out! Running out of ink at 1 AM the morning an essay is due is not good ;)

That's happened to me before in high school. Here's a trick you can use: If you're running out of black ink, change the font color to gray. That way, you can avoid the patchy lines of ink/no ink that you get when you're running out, and gray is still readable and close to black.

Printers are pretty darn cheap these days. Get one, and get one with a scanner and copier for added convenience (they're called all-in-ones). Even the all-in-ones are pretty cheap, and if you're just using it for school, there's no need to get an expensive one.

All in ones are definetley a nice option - but do you really use a scanner or copier all that often? Perhaps it's jsut me, but a simple black and white laser printer seems better due to noticably lower ink costs.

Just have 1 extra ink cartridge in ur desk and you'll be fine =P

... actually I used my black up at the very very end printing stuff to study for my last final =P

Thanks redski, I was thinking about that thread but was too lazy to go look it up.
