Printing at the Library?

How much does it cost and what printer should I get? Deciding to buy one during October's Reading days. All I need is something that'll last me 4 years and thats just a basic printer. I'm on a budget so nothing pricey

I was at Wal-Mart today and saw some decent HP printers for $29, I got the same one with my Mac for free and it seems to be a decent printer so far. HP generally has the best print quality, build quality, price and ink price. They also had some Canon printer for $29 if you'd prefer that.

Printing the in the library uses your Cav Advantage card, but I'm not sure how much it costs.

it was 8 cents a page last year

I think you're better off buying a really simple, black&white inkjet. I agree in that HP you'll get the best bang for your buck, and I suggest looking on amazon.com for one. They usually include 1-2 extra ink cartridges, and I usually go through one black and white a school year and one color an entire year, but I do minimal printing. But if you use Draft mode all the time, I'm sure even regular printing people can get great mileage out of an HP cartridge. HP cartridges are often the easiest to find, as well.

If you’re going to get a black and white printer, I’d recommend an inexpensive HP Laser Printer. The print quality is nicer than an inkjet, and supplies (toner cartridges versus ink cartridges) are less expensive over time.

You can purchase reasonably priced toner cartridges from these folks. Inkjet Cartridges, Printer Ink Cartridges, Laser and Laser Toner, Refill Kits - LdProducts

you can try sniping those sites maybe once or twice a week. There is a "brother company" laser b&w printer that goes on sale occasionally. It is $50 with free shipping and one of the best deals there. I am still waiting for it

HHD has a good suggestion if you only want b&w, but if you have one printer, I'd suggest having the flexibility to print in color. If only for a diagram or a report cover, having the option to print in color, however infrequently, would be nice. The library printers are laser, so if you want the better print quality for something important, you can always go there.

My printer in only b/w is there a place on grounds were I could print in color if I needed it?

vistany, I'm sure someone else in your building will have a color printer. If not your building, then one of your friends. Someone will probably let you print in color if it's only 1 or 2 sheets. If you bring your own paper and offer them a buck or two, they'll probably be even more willing.

good advice. Thanks db.

thanks everyone!

oh question again, i have a macbook, would an HP printer hook up fine to it?

Yup, any hp printer, and if it is fairly new and has usb (within the last 5 yrs or so) you won't even need a driver. I've got my MBP hooked up to an HP working great.

I used to buy printers and then trash them after the ink/toner ran out because it was just cheaper to buy a new one.

Not really, I would take them to the dump when it was free recycling day. Probably still environmentally wrong -- maybe I am now being punished from above by having to endure the trayless meal fiasco in the mess hall.

Besides a printer, I have found that a stand-alone scanner with decent OCR software is invaluable.

It's so bloody hard to get a refund for misprints, well, if you're printing from your dorm's computer lab, anyway. I have to physically file it at Alderman; after I walked there in the rain, I realised I forgot to note down my workstation number. :/

UHH yeah w-t-f? the environmental club was outside of o-hill today and they were trying to get rid of the plates.

..........

i don't think my hand will work for soup.

Thank lord they weren't there when I was ;)...someone would've got it. Let me guess, Gore-Tex is bad for the environment too, so why don't we just get soaked and freeze in the rain.

They are the kind of people that make you want to drive a Suburban, let it idle while you go grocery shopping, and clear cut a forest for your new house. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for saving the environment, and do my part (including not driving a huge gas guzzler or clear cutting forests), but some people just take it overboard.

I KNOW. i just avoided the table and then was mauled by all of the a capella groups. I was like I can't sing! They were like it's okay! And as I walked fast, I turned and was like no, unless you enjoy the sound of screeching whales, I don't think you'll like my singing.

and didn't they get rid of the trays to avoid people wasting food? because that's not working with me lol. I go in the beginning and get my food and then make a second trip for a grand total of 3 plates + salad. And then I usually eat one plate worth (I sample the 3 plates) + the cucumbers on the salad. And my hall mates do the same thing sooo there's like 20 plates for 5 people lol. We look like pigs.

The trays wasn't to reduce food, just washing. People would spill crap all over their trays and they'd have to wash them and that wasted a ton of water. Even if they looked clean, they still had to wash them. But yeah, the getting rid of the plates is dumb. Although, using those biodegradable ones could work, but I'm sure that they're expensive.

PS- this rain, and the thunderstorm this morning, SUCKS

Well, you don't really get initiated into your dorm room until you've experienced being woken up by thunder in it. Plus, thunder evokes all sort of pleasant childhood memories. ;)
