I will be a Warren freshman living on campus.

How does printing work? Do students bring their own printers or does the dorm provide printers for students to print through wireless connection?

Thanks.

most people bring their own but it's not necessary, as there are locations (libraries and commuter lounges) all over the campus that you can print to, from one of the school's computers, your computer in your room, or your laptop roaming the school wireless system. it's really convenient -- like if you had to print out a copy of a study guide from your friend in revelle; he/she could send it to print at the warren study lounge all the way from revelle.

however, unlike some schools, you do pay for printing. you buy a balance of $X and you get to use that $X for as long as you're at UCSD (eg, mine carried over when I switched from undergrad to grad status). it was something like $0.05 for a page of B&W and $1.00 for a page of color.

acs.ucsd.edu has more info on printers, locations, and buying printing credits. as well as other computer-y things.

Astrina: Thanks for your help, much appreciated. I went to the acs website you mentioned and got additional information.

Sorry, but I have follow-up questions:

Are there acs provided printers at the dorms?

With all the acs provided printers, why do most people still bring their own printers?

I would be in a triple room. Am I right that there is really not much space for a printer?

Thanks again.

dorms? like in your room or suite? no way. there are locations of printers given on the ACS site, look for the one closest to you. (and use the campus map to help reference the locations)

because most people don't know about the ACS printers as prefrosh, and when you move off-campus it's nice to have a printer in your apartment. i brought mine because i already had one as a high schooler and i didn't want to give it to my brother.

depends on the triple, but you're going to be filling your room with a lot more junk than just a printer. you can always stash it in a closet or make a deal with your roommates, ie one person brings a printer they already have and all three of you chip in for ink and paper. at the end of the year the printer owner gets to keep the extra supplies. or something like that. but in my freshman suite of ten girls, we had ten printers.
