Prior Military Applicant

I am trying to figure out what the options are for military members looking to apply to TAMU. What I am seeing on the web page discusses transfer students and new HS grads. I don't really fit into either of these categories. I do have some college credits that you earn through navy schools but there aren't really grades associated with them. The only grades I have on my "smart transcript" is from an Accounting class I took at a community college in Maine, and I received an A. Will I have to go to Blinn or something of that nature to get the credits necessary to apply as a transfer student. Or is anyone aware of different circumstances for application for prior military service members? If anyone has any information that might be useful I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Military members do not have an alternate application process. How were your HS grades? Chances are that you graduated a while ago. Your best bet is to go to a community college and acquire everything necessary to transfer to TAMU as a Junior. I would talk to a transfer coordinator or admission counselor (from TAMU) and ask if there is a Transfer or Articulation Agreement with your perspective community college. Just get good grades keep a high GPA and make sure you are taking the right classes. Your military service will give you an edge in the application process in that you have work and life experience that is different from that of the other transfer applicants (Include your experiences as an active duty member in your essays). Some Universities are very military friendly but none as far as I’m aware offer a special process for military members.

Talk to your community college about them possibly accepting any of your Navy credits. Although I think this might be very hard to do. I am currently active duty and have a lot of credits I’ve earned from making rank, boot camp, training schools, etc. but I did not attempt to transfer any of them. I have been going to community college and have been working towards completing all of the requirements to transfer just like any other student. What I noticed is that after following a checklist of everything needed to transfer you have accumulated enough credits that you won’t need any of the military stuff. Besides, trying to get college credit for something like “seamanship” is pretty tough.

Also, there are some perks that I have received while attending community college. All Active/Veterans get priority registration at my school which is great considering that I get to add my classes before everyone else.

Here is a link to a thread that I thought was pretty interesting:

Lastly, are you familiar with the Yellow Ribbon program? This is an amazing program that is attached to the post 911 GI Bill…read up on it if you haven’t already heard of it.

[Yellow Ribbon Program - U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs](http://www.gibill.va.gov/gi_bill_info/ch33/yellow_ribbon.htm)

Thanks for the response mcuevas I checked out your links and found some helpful information.

If I understand it right, the yellow ribbon program is if you are going to a private school that costs more than the max the 9/11 GI Bill will pay. Which is the cost of the most expensive public school in the state, TAMU is a public school so all tuition will be covered under the 9/11 bill.

As for a little update on where I am at:

I exchanged a few emails with the admissions department at TAMU, and found out that I will have to meet the requirements as a transfer student for admission. So once I get out, I will apply to Blinn and then work on my common body of knowledge classes and apply to TAMU after I meet the requirements. As for the military credits, I am not going to have them applied until after I transfer. They won’t help me at Blinn and if it takes me several attempts to be accepted they could hurt me because some departments have a cap on how many credits you can have and transfer. The admissions adviser recommended I transfer in before submitting my credits from military service for this reason.

On another note for anyone who was looking to transfer into A&M under the TAP program; I found out that the restrictions on it are fairly stringent, and few students actually gain admission under the program. I will be excluded from using it because all credits have to be from the same institution to qualify and by the time I apply to transfer I will have credits from 2-3 schools.

If anyone else can add anything it would be helpful, or if anyone has questions I’d be happy to share more of what I have found out.

It wouldn’t let me edit the last post, and I didn’t really respond to your questions mcuevas.

My high school grades were pretty average, it was awhile ago and I don’t remember the exact GPA. It will have been 12 years by the time I apply back to college. I also took some courses at SFA/HCC right out of HS and again I had a mix of grades. I plan on dumping those transcripts upon applying to A&M, which I can do after they are 10 years old with A&M’s ‘Fresh Start’ program. The courses that would transfer and mean anything are few and the rest would be counted as electives basically with the exception of like a couple English and History classes. The benefits of keeping them are outweighed by the fact that not very many of them would apply to my prospective major and would just be extra credits (back to the transfer cap.)
