Prior transfer student to Cal (Fall 2005): open for questions.

Greetings,
I transfered to Cal from a CC last year, with a major in History. I'd be happy to answer any questions about whatever.

Goodluck.

Lowest transfer GPA you've witnessed?

Within the History department, the lowest transfer GPA that I've witnessed was around a 3.8. That doesn't speak for all the major though.

how many haas transfers have you seen that have come from a CC?

I haven't seen many Haas students who have transfered from community colleges, although there are some. Haas is known to be one of the most, if not the most selective school for undergraduate transfers at Cal. This is according is to a friend of mine who transfered to Haas.

when did transfer decision come out ur year?

They came out on April 30th, just one day sooner than this year. I know that the wait is terrible.

How was the adjustment socially and academically? Thanks alot for answering questions, I'm sure I speak for everyone here when I say we appreciate it.

Where did you end up living, and how is it?

Academically speaking, the adjustment was quite difficult. During my time at community college, I became used to earning "A's" with a relatively small amount of studying. I mean, I studied, but not nearly as much as now. When I was accepted here at Cal, I thought I could just as easily continue what I was doing at my old CC. However, this place as a way of humbling you out very quickly. The academic standards here, at least within most of the Letters and Science departments, are pretty tough. Right now, I have 4 classes, and I'm reading about 500 - 700 pages of various texts per week. The writing standards are much more higher than in CC as well. Final exams are very different too. In most Letters and Science departments, Final exams are 3 hours long, and they are all Blue-Book. Scan-trons, multiple choice, extra-credit... all that goes right out the window here. But, you will get used to it very quickly.. trust me.

Socially speaking, this place is really cool. There's always something interesting going on. The professors and the other students (at least the ones I've met) seem very easy to get along with.

Where do you live? If off campus, how did you find a place?

To MrMuirc,
I'm living in an apartment near campus right now. If you can find some people who will go in with you in renting an apartment, or if you can find a room for rent, i recommend that rather than the dorms. You will probably save money by doing that.

Hey, I'm from Walnut Creek. Do you recommend going by BART (living at home) to school? Do you know of anybody who does that?

Yeah, I know alot of people who take BART to school. The Berkeley BART station is only a couple of blocks west of campus. Also, when you get your Cal ID card, you can get a free (almost) buss pass for AC Transit, if that helps too.

I am econ major..Am I supposed to read 500-700pages a week even though my major is Economics which requires much mathematics skills?

Or The fact that you have to read a lot is just because your major is history which require much English skills?

If you are an Econ major, you will probably have less reading than me. However, expect alot more reading than what you have encountered at CC. Most likely, all of the classes you take here will not be related to Econ. The majority of students here usually take about 2 classes in their major per semester, and then various elective classes, so that they don't get burned out on the same subject. Not just history, but pretty much all social science and humanities courses here are loaded with reading. I took an sociology class in which we had to read about a book per week, plus other stuff, so it's just not history. Just expect it is all I'm saying, so you can prepare yourself mentally for it if it hit you.

How hard are the math courses and sciences In Cal comparing to to ones in CCs (CCC physics is very tough too) ... by the way, we don't need to read 500-700 pages if we are math, physics, bio chem majors right (Those majors are still Letter and science).

is political science at Cal a highly competitive major in terms of GPA and acceptance rate? if that the lowest GPA for history major is 3.8 is true, that's really scary......

Political science is in the same division in terms of admission as history, Destiny.

Math courses here are much more difficult than at CC. It seems that the philosophy of the Math department here is to test how you utilize what you have learned to new and unfamiliar problems. So what you see on a test often looks different from what you were previously doing in class or for homework. I can't really speak for other science departments, as I haven't taken any of their courses. No, you probably won't have to read that much either, but if you are taking math courses, you will probably have a equally time consuming amount of take home exercises.
