I just found college confidential, (late i know,) so if i placed this thread in the wrong forum i apologize, but could someone please tell me if it is better to include an essay when it is not required. does it look better to include one? thank you

If you use the Common App, an essay is required. There are topics you can choose from. I suggest sticking to the school’s requirement. The school’s get tens of thousands of applications. If the school doesn’t require an essay, then don’t send one unless you think your application does not do you justice without the essay. By this I mean circumstances that the school should know about you that would help your application. There are many examples in this forum and discussions around this. Keep browsing and reading threads. There is so much to learn, even for a parent like me.
If the application form includes an optional essay, you should definitely take advantage of that space to show the admissions committee more about your personality, character, talent or experiences. If you are considering sending an essay is not called for at all in the application form, don’t do it.
