Uhoh- Which college did you apply to?

From general studies how can one get into an engineering major? Can somebody tell me please.

Congrats to all who got admissions!

Deferred with a 33 ACT, 2200 SAT, and a 3.3 GPA (UW and W. . .). Two friends, one with a 33 and a 3.8, the other with a 30 and a 4.2, also were deferred. Apparently UIUC hates swimmers. I believe friends were going into bio and chem, respectively, while I was going into ACES.

Seriously?! you got deferred from ACES with that ACT score?! that's crazy. i got into ACES with a 29... what major did you apply to within ACES? i think the hardest one i can think of is pre-vet.

Ouch Raoul - a 33 act? How do you have the same W and UW GPA?

Admit
Aerospace Engineering

OOS
ACT: 34
UW GPA: 3.9
W GPA: 4.2
lots of honors and aps

You know what guys, I've been reading all the threads for 2 hours and I came to conclusion that U of Illinios is not really looking for geeks. They are looking for active, social member that may improve U of I to become a better university. That's the only solid explanation for me.

Admit
Electrical Engineering

International Student
SAT : 2210
G.P.A : 4.0.
Lots of Ec's and Awards.

I am happy!!

I applied to the Consumer Economics and finance major, but it's apparently a "back door" that my dad made me put on the application, saying I can "change it later" (how well that worked seems apparent). Regarding the W and UW, I have no idea. I definitely took at least 2-3 honors/AP's a year, so course load wouldn't be an issue. I had pretty good essays and EC's (music, varsity sports, tutoring, etc.). Our school doesn't rank. Make of that what you will. I just hope to get in the second go-round, because applying to good schools is awkward for me due to the GPA/ACT discrepancy.

I applied to the business program out of CT. I've seen kids get into UI with like 3.3's and 1250's, so I'm a little baffled.

I'm somewhat confused by all this. One of my friends was admitted with a 29 GPA, but a near perfect UW GPA to Chemistry. :

Bull. The only thing UIUC looks at is class rank, period, regardless of the students ability or, a radical idea I know, KNOWLEDGE. I cannot find one counterexample to this.

well fiN01, although I have crappy AP test scores and got accepted, it doesn't mean that UIUC only look at rank.
(I think you were bitter when you saw that I got in with a 28 ACT and crappy AP scores) I'm pretty sure UIUC does not look at AP test scores since I don't remember putting what scores I got into the application.

I didn't take all easy classes and breezed my way through top 5% in my graduating class. I took all the AP classes available at my school that I could fit into my schedule and got good grades. My U.W. is like a 3.75 and weighted is 4.35.

On another note, I'm quite surprised that you didn't get in on your ACT score alone. A 36 on the ACT is extremely hard to get. (I think around 200 people achieve this score every year)

i applied LAS. so what reasons would they have to defer me other than my crappy rank? my essays weren't bad, 29 act, and i had a pretty good list of activities and volunteer hours and clubs...im sad. :(

I've got 1280/1600 SAT (540 reading, 740 math) And I'm accepted. Does that explain you something?

UIUC looks for leadership in extracurriculars as well as strong test scores. That's what the admissions officer really emphasized when I visited. It's pretty much a culmination of a lot of factors, and I'm willing to bet a lot of the decisions (for many colleges, including UIUC) are based off of first impressions of the overall application. There really is no reason to ever feel bitter though; you're the only one who suffers...

RaoulDuke -- Oh wow. Bad idea. UIUC is the LAST place you want to use backdoors to get into business/engineering. They DEFINITELY look for that. I'm 99% sure that your deferral had nothing to do with yours stats, but it had to do with your apparent lack of interest in the back door major you selected. Many students apply to ACES and stuff as back doors, so ACES admission people are very particular about the people they admit. For my human nutrition major, I took all the right courses to show my interest/knowledge in the field (AP Chemistry, Foods, Anatomy, etc) and I'm even doing an independent study in sports nutrition. In addition, I had an ACES scholarship interview & department visit, so I met a lot of the directors there so they knew I showed an interest in the field.

Hakuna - Hah, I wish I knew that when I applied. Though I'm not necessarily trying to get a backdoor into business, rather, just to get into the school in general. But apparently letting others make my decisions for me is not the best approach. I definitely made the first essay about how I wanted to go to ACES, for what that's worth. I just have to wait and see, I guess.

Oh wow so many defferels, my stats are below the average of students who got deferred, this makes me really nervous. Though my application also still have not switch to priority admission.

This thread is a year old. Please confine your paranoia to current threads. This was last years EA decision thread.
