Priority Enrollment in Santa Monica College?

im currently a fresman at santa monica college, and i never knew that there was a thing called "priority enrollment". the enrollments for the winter and spring sessions are now open since yesterday and ive been given the date of 12/1 December 1 as my enrollment date instead of 11/16..so now im worried i wont have the chance to add a math class for the winter..i checked the catalog and it has 5 math 84 classes for the winter..do you guys think ill have the oppurtunity to still get a spot during my enrollment date of 12/1???

thank you

I wouldn’t worry too much. The students that are allowed to enroll before you are sophomores and those in the scholars program…who should have already completed their math courses.

SMCguy thanks alot for your answer, i really appreciate it. Also since my enrollment date is 12/1 is the priority enrollment like 11/6 for these groups of students and then 12/1 for these groups of students and so on? or is every person given a different date and time? thank you

In the event that there are no spots open on Dec. 1 for Math 84…

1) Check the class listings every day at either 1AM or 1PM (that’s when it updates).

If nothing opens up…

2) On Jan 11 in the early afternoon (dunno exact time but keep checking) they’ll drop the people that haven’t paid yet. Spots usually open up for a short while before people add all the classes.

If that fails…

3) Try to crash the class the first day. The only people I’ve really seen get turned away from crashing are those who enter the class super late and all the spots are gone or those who try to add like scholars or limited enrollment classes.

Good luck.

o ok thanks for the tip. do u also think that there will still be room open for me on 12/1 like SMCguy?

I would say you have a pretty good chance of there being a spot open, although maybe not at the most optimal time.

o ok what do u mean by optimal time? lol also i emailed the teachers telling them about my situation and asked if they could somehow hold a spot for me…but im yet to receive a reply…do u think this helps?

i mean like…it’ll probably be a late afternoon or something since the morning classes get filled up first.

oh ok thank you so much erikuh, the classes are all between 8 am to 12pm (5 classes)

also is emailing, like i mentioned before a good strategy just incase?

“also is emailing, like i mentioned before a good strategy just incase?”

That’s definitely not a good strategy, regardless of your situation.

In all likelihood, you won’t get any replies. ‘Holding a spot’ completely defeats the idea of priority enrollment for people who have taken more units.

I think your highest chance of getting the math class is to follow erikuh’s advice.

Registering for classes during this budget crunch is especially tough for freshmen.

I really doubt the prof will reply to your email. I’ve tried to get add codes via email and I’ve never gotten a reply. I really think you’ll be fine if you try to add on 12/1.

I don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing now through 12/1 is for ppl like me (sophomore, scholars)

yeah SMCguy im guessing since Math 84 is a low lv math class i doubt any scholars or sophomores will take it…so im guessing 12/1 will be an ok time for me to add…any other experiences are welcome thanks alot everyone

I’m technically a continuing student but my enrollment date is November 30th… I took classes in the summer semester but my date is still late. Considering there are only 4 Pre-Calc classes, do you think that I would still be able to get into a class?

How is a student’s enrollment priority date determined? Return to the top of the page

Our philosophy is one of student success in that we want to set students up to achieve their goals as efficiently as possible. Priority is given to those students who are close to graduation or transfer, while at the same time ensuring that new students have a schedule that starts them off on the right foot.

Continuing Students:
Calculation of units should include cumulative units completed + units In-Progress (IP).
Enrollment should be based on units as follows:
a. Special Programs as determined by California State Ed Code
b. 60-30 units completed + IP (in descending order 60-59-58-57…30)
c. 89-61 units completed + IP (in descending order 89-88-87-86…61)
d. 29-1 units completed + IP (in descending order 29-28-27-26…1)

  • e. 90 units or more completed + IP (in ascending order 90-91-92-93…) High School Concurrent Students do not receive enrollment priority. They enroll after regularly matriculated students. Enrollment date assigned to High School Students will be approximately 3-4 weeks before the term begins.
  • New Students:
Their enrollment begins one week after the continuing student enrollment begins.
New student priorities are based on application date, so the earlier they apply for admission the earlier the enrollment date will be.
Beginning with the second regular semester, students will be assigned priority as continuing students (as outlined above).

EOPS and black collegians also get priority I think.
Don’t be scared about all the classes being filled up.

The policy for winter is that only one class per person and you can only get more classes if you crash.

^^^^ updated real time.

i went to the eops office and theyre not taking any applications until like the end of 2010…also do u guys know when u get 1st priority? so basically when do u get to enroll on 11/16 instead of dates like 12/1…do u need certain units? or does it go by how long u have been there thanks

…read the long post that I, well, posted.

ok so all the math classes full…i guess i need to crash…if i do crash how successful would it be of getting a spot in the class?

impossible but try. :]
