Priority Registration Dates After Transferring

From my understanding, schools always base their priority registration dates on the number of units you have taken at the school. So once you transfer, does that mean you have 0 units and basically get a priority registration date with all the freshmen? And if that is the case, does that mean you sometimes can't get classes or that you always get bad teachers because you're trying to sign up for junior-level classes?

In the schools that I’m most familiar with, transfers (and new freshman) are at the bottom of the barrel for their first semester as far as course registration goes. Everyone else registered the prior semester. The best professors and times may already be taken, unless your school has a policy of holding back so many spots for each registration (orientation) day. Even if you are shut out, often you may have luck getting into a specific course via a wait list, or during the add/drop period at the beginning of the semester. In subsequent semesters though, at those same schools, there is no disadvantage to have been a transfer. Your chances would be the same as anyone else’s when registering for courses. This may be done on a grade level basis (i.e. all seniors register the first day, juniors the next…etc.) and it is first come, first served within those days, or you could be randomly assigned a time that you can log in and register, or a combination of the two approaches. But check with your specific school as to their policies. YMMV.
