I've recieved several priority applications from schools I have no interest in such as Tulane, Ursinus, etc. However, today I recieved a "VIP" application to UVM with no fee (still an essay even though the email said there wasn't one). I recently eliminated UVM from my college list, but with the application fee waived I figure why not apply, right? There must be some disadvantage to this though. Does it disqualify you from being considered for any merit aid or something? What's the catch? Any help appreciated.

I've gotten three VIP Applications also. I'm honestly confused. I promised myself not to apply to an over-overload of colleges, but so far my priority/VIP/fee-waiver apps are;

RPI
Drexel University
Tulane University (If they re-open after the Hurricane)
Washington and Lee University

There is no disadvantage. They want you because they know you would normally never go to their school and rather go to an ivy or such. Instead, they try to suck up to you by telling you how special, unique, and better you are than everyone else and then get you to apply, and most of the time give you full scholarships/rides too. Drexel's offers full tutition scholarships w/ its quick app along with quicker application to accelerated MBA/JD/MD programs, for example

Be careful if you're applying ED/EA though. I can't apply to any of these because Yale's Admission Office told me SPECIFICALLY that I cannot apply to these VIP private schools applications until after my decision from them, or I cannot apply SCEA to Yale

I'm not doing any binding early applications, just a few early action, so I think I should be safe. I was shocked to recieve one of these from UVM though. It was a nice surprise. Thanks for the input!

All they know about me is my ACT score... but UMinn sent me this weird "Golden Gopher" application.
Is it better for my chances to apply to the "fast" one? Or is it better to apply the honest, hard way?

Do they actually look at the fast apps in a better light? Wouldn't writing an essay help my chances?

bump, if not already.

I think its just to convince you to apply, it doesnt increase your chances...

I know at Drexel, the VIP apps are reviewed before the regular apps and you receive a decision by November. Also, they only make you write a brief personal statement rather than a 1-2 page essay. So, in the case of Drexel, it isn't just to lure you in.
