Is the priority waitlist binding?
I've been searching threads and all seem to give contradictory answers.
I tried calling up but no one picked up :/
Could someone answer me/get the admissions office to answer my question?

how do u know u’re on the priority waitlist and not normal waitlist? does it say so on ur where am in the process? plz let me know. i do not know if i’m on normal waitlist or priority waitlist? thx

I asked them to email me the decision letter.

I am also on priority and according to the letter I got it seems binding. Do you happen to know where I can access my financial aid letter because it says I have the ability to do that?

The priority wait list is binding in the sense that you have to submit $600 for “enrollment deposit” if they accept you. Of course, you can walk away and lose the money.

It says that if you accept a spot on the priority waiting list and are admitted, you’re expected to go, not required. You could pay the deposit and then withdraw. Also, the letter states that you can withdraw your spot on the priority waiting list up until 5 pm est on May 5th.

Oh ok.
I thought so…just wanted to confirm…
Thanks everyone for your replies :)

Did any of you get your financial aid notifications? I’m hesitant to sign up for the list if I know I cannot afford it.

Wait, they make you pay the deposit AFTER they accept you so you probably can just say no, they cant force you to pay.

Of course, it may be in your best interest because CMU is probably worth 600 bucks, and will probably give you at least that much more in Fin Aid.

I called today and I see that my financial aid documents were sent out yesterday and should be here tomorrow. Should give me enough time to get my slip back in.

Really? It’s not binding? Then why would anyone not put themselves on the priority waitlist…?
That doesn’t seem sensical to me, unless very few people are chosen to have the opportunity to be on the priority waitlist.

Some people can’t afford to throw away $600.
Regardless, I’m accepting a spot on the priority waitlist for Tepper! :)

I strongly believe the priority waiting list is binding; the info. paper attached to decision letter explains that “this option is only for those students who have now decided that carnegie Mellon is their first choice and, if space becomes available and they are admitted, will enroll.”

So, for those, like I, who got more than one waitlist letter from other colleges, should think about whether they would commit to going to CMU. It’s like early-decision… T_T

There is no way they can make you enroll. You have to pay the 600 dollar deposit when you are selected, but if something comes up you can always withdraw at a later date. You lose your 600 dollars though.

This is similar to how you commit a school by May 1st and if you are admitted to a school you were waitlisted at you can choose not to attend the school you already committed to.

How do they force you to pay the 600 dollar deposit though?

I haven’t actually seen anything but I think you would be legally obligated by a contract when you choose to be put on the Priority Waitlist. So, you’d rather pay $600 than be sued, I suppose.

Or they share what they’ve discovered about your integrity with the other schools you applied to. Worse than a lawsuit?

did everyone get a priority option?
