priority waitlist

I got the priority waitlist but I dont think Ill take it. If UChicago wants me ill definitely be going there instead and if not UIUC Engineering accepted me awhile ago and gave me some good options so that isnt that bad as well.

Wait, so the priority waitlist isn't offered to everyone? I just received a card with the option of the priority waitlist, but I figured everyone who was waitlisted had the option.

No, it is not offered to everyone. Priority waitlistees have a much higher chance of getting off. If you are interested in actually attending then I would take the spot. If not, rejecting it ASAP would help the other waitlistees so I recommend that.

My daughter just go priority waitlist

They could just have accepted me instead of prioty waitlisting. it would have made my choices much easier. Also I want to do ECE because of wanting to do nanotechnology. How am I supposed to choose. Hopkins is nice, I don't know about URoch, but they're offering me 8,000 a year. I already decided I'm probably turning down WPI, (13000 a year), and Maryland, Case, Syrcause. How am I supposed to decide. Is there any possible way of getting in ECE later on. Ugg... why couldn't Stanford just have accepted me.

Jack, if you truly want CMU, take the waitlist. If not, give the other kids a chance :)

I hope you know the different environments with respect to JHU vs CMU. It is pretty cutthroat over at JHU and they are more known for biomed/premed while we have always been one of the best in CS/ECE. The average salaries are higher for CMU as are the job opps (you've probably read about Microsoft and now the CMU professor heading Google, etc.)

The facts don't lie so if you want the jobs/prestige among employers/recruiters, then take CMU and show your interest in it by sending in some additional information.

If not, just ignore the letter and let some other kid get in. I know quite a few who would like to get an acceptance later in May :)

Yeah but they pretty much say you cant get into ECE. Also JHU isn't that cutthroat in engineering, (except maybe BME) but i'm not interested in that major.

Where were you priority Wled?

CIT, (it says all engineering departments other than ECE in the the thing, College of Humanities and Social sciences, Mellon College of Science, and Tepper. \ Also what is Information systems?

Information Systems is the cross between Business/CS. It is a small program and a interdisciplinary one but it is highly marketable (read 2111lk's posts about his graduating son in IS). Avg salaries are comparable with those in CIT/Tepper in the overall 60+ks.

Honestly, CMU's CIT still boasts higher avg salaries but it seems you like JHU more so the decision ultimately lies with you.

Good luck, Jack!

well I like CMU more with ECE. Is it not possible to transfer at all?

It is very possible to transfer. Double majors/minors/dual degrees in ECE are even guaranteed.

It depends on space and at least a 2.0 to apply for internal transfer and a 2.0 for a double major.

how hard would it be dual degree between engineering and tepper, (which end should I start). and how worthwhile is considering IS?

Your main would be engineering and your double major would be in Tepper. It is not that hard because I am doing a double in Tepper and Computer Science (right now taking CS classes).

IS is highly marketable with just about the same salaries as Tep/CIT. I would definitely consider it if you are interested in a mix between Engineering/Business and cannot decide.

I don't think a double major is that hard though so if I were in your shoes I'd go with CIT and then later have the option to either 1. Double major in ECE 2. Transfer to ECE 3. Double in Tepper 4. Transfer to IS.

There are many options available and I really like Walden's latest post saying that you basically start with a clean plate and decide what you want to do from there.

I guess that's the one thing i didn't like when i was at cmu, was that it seemed like an ordeal of internal transfering. whereas at other places it's not a big deal at all. but i'll call em up tomorrow and see how it is. I mean CMU is pretty hot, and I'd like to start up a nanotechnology business or research team after attending Harvard business, so perhaps CMU is the way to go.

harvard business.....lol.....

Haha really? I don't know where that comes from but it isn't hard to "transfer" to ANY of those schools except ECE where it depends mostly on space and demand.

I know for sure 3.0 gets you into Tepper/IS for transfer while double majors are guaranteed for 2.0 no matter WHAT the school/field.

There are actually two seperate questions I want to ask. Both are in a way related and they are not also.
First one to all: When i rang up CMU and talked to Director in Admissions and asked him why I am not "priority Waitlisted" he said that since I have been admitted to CIT, priority waitlist is not offered to me. Well. Being International, I am not sure whether I understood 100% of what he meant. Has anyone who is "priority waitlisted" been admitted to CMU in any dept/college? This will make us clear where we (or ratherI) stand?
This is to Accepted Already: One doubt. You have adviced jack22 that you can double major in ECE. I am also admitted to CIT and waitlisted in ECE. I have been thinking all along that if I do not make it to ECE, a double major between two Engg depts is not possible and hence started thinking about CS? Can I double major in ECE and Mech? I am sorry,AA, I am bothering you with a lot of questions. I do not want to pester Admissions; time difference between my country and US is very big etc.

If that is what the guy said then it is true. If you've been accepted to 1 CMU college then you can't be PWL'ed.

A double major in 2 Engineering departments is possible. If you want to double in CS that is fine too. I don't really understand your question exactly but you can double major in ANY field even within your own college. For example I can double major in Tepper/Econ if I wanted.

CAN I IN DOUBLE IN MECH AND ECE?? That is great!!! You know. No one told me I cant. I had some vague recollection of reading somewhere in some thread long past that one cannot double major in two Engg core areas-like Mech&ECE.
Coming to think of it, may be it does not relate to CMU, even. You know, sometimes, you assume something on some vague basis, and never question that; but go about building on that wrong assumption.
I will go through course catalog once more and pose this question to Admissions also.
You know, the course catalog page 103-{website download}, first column is cut in midsentence under para "Double majors/double degrees in CIT" {my rotten luck!!} and hence appears incomplete. So I always wonder what crucial portion is cut or not cut?
I think one more question/doubt, they may not mind.
If this is also possible, then my decision to sign the enrolment letter becomes almost a final decision. Thks once again!
