i know that being put on the priority waitlist gives you a better chance of getting in than from the regular one. does anyone know what the prospects of getting in off the priority waitlist have been in the past?

Well on my letter it is stated that approx. 20% get in off the PWL.

i dont get it. if you get notified on may 8th n must postmarked deposit by may 8th.. where in between do you actually get to think about it? do they tell you in the morning online at least, cause otherwise i feel like its as soon as you get the mail (in my case, 4:30) then run to the post office with a check or somthing..

you dont get to think about it.

its like an early decision waitlist. ha!

wait... seriously? so, by saying you wanna stay on the priority waitlist, its binding that you must submit the money n attend? i probably wont even get accepted but im just wondering how it works.

thats what I was able to discern

I don't think it works quite like that.

If you take the PWL they may call you (I believe that's been the method at least in past years) and offer you a spot. They'll call after they've received the deposits (ie shortly after May 1) from those who will definitely attend CMU this fall. If you don't want it, just tell them no, you have nothing to lose. You have over a month (from now) to think about this possibility. By then you'll have a deposit into College X, holding your spot in that college's freshman class.

But if CMU is your preference, tell them you accept the offer and send your deposit. You could probably get a couple days if you need it to make the decision. But as I mentioned you've had over a month to think about it if it happens. You'll lose the deposit you have at College X. This is basically the same as any waitlist. But at least here you know pretty much to the day when you may receive an offer.

You can check last year on CC...they definitely took a decent # from PWL.

To everyone on the waitlist: keep in mind CMU is not the first choice of many applicants it admits. Many qualified students are likely to have been also accepted in higher-ranked universities and will choose to go there instead of CMU. Therefore, the chances of getting out of the waitlist and into CMU are actually pretty high if your stats are good.

2231clk, don't i lose the 600 dollar deposit if i mail it to them before i hear their decision (if i get rejected)? its non refundable.. perhaps, they tell you midnight online? DOES ANYONE KNOW??

eh.. i guess i gotta call them up and ask these questions

You only mail them the money after you get accepted off the PWL.

When you accept a spot on the pwl (like now) you don't send them any money.

Pretty sure they call you, at least that's what they did last few years, maybe different method of notification this year?

If they call you May 8, they do want an answer pretty quickly. But it's not like it's a shot out of the blue...you know it may be coming, and when, and should be prepared. They can't expect a postmarked May 8 payment, that's often impossible and I'm sure they realize that.

I'm gonna guess they'll take a decent amount off the pwl. With increased selectivity, and the common application, people are applying to more schools and yields drop. Good luck! I know they took some last few years.

Would you please show your priority waitlist letter? I want to see the different details to the normal waitlist./
Thanks,

From what I could discern, Priority Waitlist is for those who KNOW that CMU is their first choice above any of their other acceptance and who INTEND if accepted, to immediately put in a deposit.

They ask you to sign a statement stating your intention to do so, so there is a "binding" feel to this, though I don't know how they could enforce it. However, they counsel you to also put in a deposit at a school where you've been accepted, as only 20% are taken off the PWL. If accepted off the Priority Waitlist, you would lose that deposit at the other university.

Westchestermom... i am pretty sure that not everyone is given the option for priority waitlist, however. though you are correct in explaining the differences, some people are put on the general waitlist without the priority option.

I've been told in past years however that usually most people get off the priority waitlist because many spots usually open up (more than the 20% they state on the letter). And yeah, I don't think everyone is given the priority waitlist option, only the more qualified candidates. I also think the availability of spots depend on which college you're vying for. Correct me if I'm wrong. And who here is deciding to get on the PWL?

baaaaaabycakes, I've heard out that the priority waitlist option is only given to those who have applied to only one school and waitlisted from it.

actually i applied to 3 of the schools at CMU (tepper, CIT, and MCS). however, they told me in the letter that i can only be put on waitlist for tepper and CIT because MCS is already full.

I got rejected from Tepper and priority waitlisted at IS and Humanities.

Based on the conditions of PWL, I'm assuming that I can only check off PWL for one school. Right?

Right. Pick IS so we have a better shot at HSS ;) and i hear they call to tell you their final decision? what if you live overseas?

Do you think replying near or before April 13th makes a difference?

Anyone waitlisted for IS??

statistics:
found this in "best 361 colleges" of 2007 or something like that.

last year 2704 were placed on waiting list
of those 270 accepted a spot on the waiting list
and of those 44% were accepted into CMU.

I was wondering if these stats are generally the same every year? or do they vary alot?
