I plan on applying to Clemson by the "Priority Deadline" of December 1. Will this increase my chances based on the fact that I am right on the border of Clemson's average GPA and SAT scores. And I'm hoping Pierre knows this because not many will, but when will I be notified if I apply priority deadline?

I don’t think Clemson’s admissions office will come out and say this but I believe it will increase your chances of admissions due to the fact that there will be more “spots” available as opposed if you apply later on in the admission process.

You will be notified around February 15th if you apply by the priority deadline. If you apply after the priority deadline, you will be applied in the weeks following the initial notification date.

Thank you!

oh and I just read what I wrote, correction: “you will be notified in the weeks following the initial notification date” (not “applied” <facepalm>)</facepalm>

I just applied today actually and nowhere on the application did it ask me about priority decision. Do I automatically get put into the priority decision pool because I applied before that deadline?

yes you automatically get put in the priority decision pool if you apply before the deadline (I mean I don’t see why you would choose to hear back from Clemson any later haha)

What if you applied in October. Do they evaluate your application any sooner? Do they offer “Likely Letters”?

If you applied in October, you’ll still hear around February 15th. That’s their notification date for all “early” applicants. They won’t offer “likely letters”.

Exception to this rule is if you receive a large scholarship, you may hear before February 15th (like an out of state tuition waiver etc…)

Pierre0913-please explain these tuition waivers. Thanks

Here’s a PDF that gives a good summary of scholarships that Clemson gives to recruit freshman: <a href=“Office of Student Financial Aid | Clemson University”>Office of Student Financial Aid | Clemson University;

Not on the list but historically high achieving out of state students have received an “out of state waiver” which allows them to get pay tuition at the in-state rates.

Thanks Pierre0913, you are a great resource. We are from Mass. as well, how was your transition to the area?

My transition to the area was smooth. I came to Clemson and the south with a relatively open mind, ready to try whatever and experience much of the South as I could and that definitely helped a lot. I know there are some students from New England though that transfer because they cannot deal with the culture change between New England and the south so I think that really depends on the student. (maybe distance away from home has a part in that too)

What would be considered “high achieving” OSS?

Thanks
Julia

In the past it has been a SAT score of at least 1350 (critical reading/math) and a high school class rank in the top 10% (minimum requirements).

From Clemson Site…

Non-Resident Merit Scholarship
Domestic out-of-state students with at least a 1250 SAT (CR+M) or 28 ACT and who are ranked in the top 10%* of their high school class will receive a merit scholarship of at least $5000 annually. Students with higher test scores and high school performance outside of the top 10% will be considered for these merit scholarships up to $15,000 annually.
